LOCATION:  Bell County, Near Pineville, KY, Brown's Creek, in Hen Holler,  on Bugger Mountain

TERRAIN:   Mountains, woods

Observed:  My story is this.  I never paid any attention to it until my aunt and uncle confirmed it a few weeks ago, but the story goes like this.   When my Dad was a young adult he and his family of 14 lived on Browneys Creek in Middlesboro,Kentucky.   My Dad and his family didn't live in any community other than something they called a holler and in those days they did not have a car.  They had to walk to church, to the store, to school.   Well one night, as the story went,  Dad was walking home from his brothers house about 2 or 3 at night (A.M.)  when he was passing this field that had a fruit tree of some sort in it.   He said he had heard limbs being snapped and broken and he looked over into the field and he said he saw something extremely tall, hairy and big.   It was standing on two feet like a man and it had green glowing eyes that reflected red in the moonlight or something like that. I  would have to talk with my relatives again.

He said he stopped to look at it and this thing stopped eating and just stood there like a man and stared at him. Then it started to grunt real low in its chest, then whistled real loud and took off running like a man back through the field into the woods.  Well Dad took off and ran all the way home and told his mom that there was something back in the holler breaking limbs off their fruit trees.   Mamaw being the kind of person she was probably said it was a black bear or his imagination. but dad swore that it was bigger than a black bear and didn't run away on all fours but ran away like you or i would.  Well she still wouldn't believe him so he just went to bed and the next day he and some of his brothers went there to check it out.  And my dad who was well over 6 feet by that time said that the limbs were broken so far up the tree that he couldn't even reach the closest one on tip toes.

So to close this story ---That night, i think it was a Sunday night,  my Mamaw was walking home from church and that same spot that dad said he saw this thing, -- there it was again.

According to what I was told,  Mamaw had said that it was sitting down like it was eating and when it saw her, it stood straight up and took off running just like a person.   She said it did not drop to its feet,  it ran,  and it was so fast  she said that it was gone before she could follow it into the woods. But she did say that it had green eyes and it was very, very hairy because she claimed she could see its fur on its back or shoulders moving around with the wind.

She swore until the day she died that it was not a man but something that was shaped like a man that ran like a man. She also said that when it got into the woods it stopped running and went from one side to the other and it was whistling ---and that it did it for a while until far off in the mountain she heard an answering call that she said sounded just like what that thing was doing --and when whatever it was that answered this thing took off --and according to my Dad wasn't seen no more.   But they always knew it was there because their fruit trees were always raided and you could always hear it in the woods and the mountain behind their holler.   At times he (Dad)  said it would scream, at times whistle or screech in a way that they couldn't recognize any other animal that would do that.   And sweety these are hill folk.   There is no pulling any wool over their eyes. Most likely if they saw one then they saw one.

But  who knows?   But my Dad told me this story all my life.   I never really  believed it until a few weeks ago, cause if my Mamaw saw it as well then my Dad wasn't seeing things.   So i believe that it really happened.  At least I feel they had an experience that can't be explained.   Well that's his (Dad's)  story.   I wish he and Mamaw were still alive cause he could really tell it to you better than i can.  I've written enough and I hope it interests you.   If not that's cool.   I  know it was so long ago, but you know what's strange is that holler they lived in,  the Hill Folk there now won't go no where near it or  the mountain behind them.   Guess what it got named about 15 years ago.... Bugger Mountain.   I wonder if there is a connection?

My Dad also said that Mamaw called it a cantamount what ever that means?  Cause she
said it screamed like a woman or something.
