LOCATION:
Pocahontas County, West Virginia
TERRAIN:
Forest
OBSERVED:
My husband and I had hiked into our favorite
stream to flyfish for the day. We fished until dark carrying backpacks,
I was infamous for saying just one more cast leading us most always to
hike out after dark. On the hike out I noticed that there was something
following us, you could smell a wet hair smell. My husband stated that
it probably was a bear. So we started walking a little bit faster it picked
up its pace also. We came to a railroad tressel the stream below us and
probably a 100 feet across (not sure the distance). What ever it was did
the whistling the whole distant. All of the sudden as we crossed to the
other side of the tressel the thing had crossed under the tressel and was
coming across the railroad tracks right in front of us. We startled it
as it scared us. I had the opportunity in an instance to follow my flashlight
from its mid section to its head 9 to 10 feet in the air before it crashed
the trees on the other side of the tracks. We stood shaking in our boots
we could not move from fright. We really never told anyone because we just
knew that no one would believe us. We had smelled that wet hair smell and
hear the whistle on other occassions as we had the opportunity at the time
to spend countless hours in that area. But that was the first time that
we saw it. I still have no idea what it was, but know that it was bipedal,
dark brown and about 9 to 10 feet tall. We are educated individuals both
with graduate degrees.
