LOCATION:
Mingo County, West Virginia
TERRAIN:
Wooded
OBSERVED:
I was hunting that morning in the woods off of XX between XXXX XXX (where
i was raised) and XXX rd on the right hand side of XX. there is a side
rd that just leads over to the railroad tracks I went just to the left
of the open woods heading toward XXX rd way about 400 feet in the
woods. when I noticed all was quiet where a few seconds before birds where
singing and the usual sounds of the hills coming awake. Now i was
fresh out of the us army that year and in great shape and in my old stomping
grounds so to speak and was unafraid, but curious then i caught a whiff
of some very dank odor (such as a wet dog but stronger) so i settled down
on a large rock and began to cast about for some game sign , tracks and
such. All at once i hear something above me walking and none to quiet
either (twigs breaking, leaves crunching) about 300 feet up the hill and
left of my position. So i hunker down thinking its a bear or deer herd
on the move, or a escaped cow or horse as you never really know around
these parts. It was a typical misty morning for that time of year but i
could see fairly well when i spotted something big just outside of good
visibility line above me. As is got closer i realized that it wasn't
a bear, or any animal i know. so i ease up real quiet like to get a better
look at it when it must have seen me. It then stood on its back two legs
and made a weird snuffling noise. At first i thought some ole boy was trying
to play a prank on me, when all of a sudden it started heading down the
hill at a fast pace in sort of a half circle and it was moving way to easy
to be a man, as it got down to my level of the woods in sort of a flat
i got scared because it was trying to get below me and box me in (or so
I thought) so i jacked a round into the chamber of my 12 gauge and it stopped
and looked right at me. I realized then it was huge about 8 feet
tall and probably close to 400 pounds with brownish orange hair. I could
tell it knew what a weapon was which really scared me because it was kind
of craning its head to the side like it was trying to figure if it wanted
to charge me, so I did the next logical thing I ran down that hill as fast
as a scared rabbit. Now when i got to the RR tracks I turned toward that
hill and prepared to fight. I remember clicking of the safety of
my gun and waiting for about 10 seconds and it never came down to where
i could see it ,but I heard that thing and it sounded mad and it let out
a whooping sound that carried through those woods. Now as I said
i grew up in this area and I have heard that sound before several times,
as a kid but I never saw anything like that before. Now as a kid my grandparents
used to tell us about strange things around in the hills such as the ghost
of MAMIE THURMAN ,the mothman, the hollering thing ,and panthers and such
but I figured it was just that, stories but now I know better.
Activities of Witness:
I got up around 5 am got dressed had some coffee and breakfast it
was just into squirrel season so was wide awake and eager to hunt
Description of Creature:
About 400 pounds brownish orange hair kind of long had leaves and twigs
matted in it. moved on all fours at first but stood and ran on its hind
legs and the way it went down the hill on its hind legs is kind of hard
to explain. if a man runs down hill he sort of jumps and side shuffles
to keep in control I think you know what i'm saying but it ran like only
its legs where in motion its arms never moved that much and it had no neck
to speak of just a head that sloped out of its shoulder
Other Notes:
Just an erie quiet and that strange odor
Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments: Upon contact the witness had no additional information to add to this report.
