LOCATION:
Yakima County, Washington
TERRAIN:
Wooded
OBSERVED:
We were 12 yrs old and wanted to camp out before school started. We camped
by a railroad track and the Yakima River. Back in the day there used be
nothing but thickets and brushy meadows. We set up camp and ate our pork
and beans and et wood on the fire around 3:00am I was awoken by Ed talking
to himself, Ed was saying "what the hell is it?" "what the hell is that?"
I got up and put on my glasses and baseball cap and looked towards where
Ed was pointing and just on the other side of the railroad tracks was this
big huge thing just standing there. I could see its breath in the cool
morning air and what seem like steam coming off its body like it just came
out of the yakima river. We just stood there looking at it than Ed took
off running, I stood there watching it to see what it would do? It seem
to move towards me and I took off across the brushy meadow running as fast
as only a 12 year old could run. I think I was running so fast my baseball
cap blew off my head but I did not stop to go back and get it. I ran until
I hit the pavement road and turned left and ran towards the old donald
store. I past Ed and kept on running untill I could see the old stores
light off in the distance. I made it to the light and I could hear Ed running
up behind me, we hit the light and stayed under the light until day break.
We walked back to wapato. We never did go back for the camping stuff. Ed
is homeless and I work for the DSHS so I see him from time to and give
some money and ask him if he remembers what we seen back when we were 12.
Ed just laughs and says I'll never forget how huge it was just standing
there looking at us. Ed said "what woke me up was this like hard walking
or thud, thud than this heavy breathing so when I stood up this thing just
stopped and stood there I could'nt believe my eyes, I did'nt even know
I was saying "what the hell is it?" and when you got up I felt really scared
so I just thought of getting out of there. For 48 years I can still see
this thing in my mind. I sometimes drive by that area where we camped,
it is all developed now there are no more thickets, I can see the railroad
tracks and the yakima river from the road however back in the day one could
not see past the thickets and brushy meadows. The brushy meadow is now
fram land.

to be 9 feet tall to be able to stand that high over the railroad tracks

Along the Yakima River the people used to report whistling and dogs running
into the homes to scared to be outside. The Yakima River used to have thickets
upon thickets old cotton wood trees. People would be awoken by loud knocking
out in the woods. Our family had a home with up stairs and down stairs
and the living room window was high off the groud, when one night my cousin
screamed and yelled there was something ugly looking in the window at her,
there had me go around the house and close all the curtains before they
would let me up stairs. We stayed up stairs all night until our parents
came home from working at the saw mill. Edna said it had a big face and
was just looking right at her untill she screamed to this day Edna makes
sure all the curtains are closed even before it is getting dark out, her
children don't believe well Edna never believed until fear showed its face,
the next morning we walked around out side looking for tracks but the wind
which blew alnight blew everything away. Our dogs never came back home
they moved to our grandmothers home.
