DATE: 1978
TIME: Around 10:00 pm
LOCATION: Washington, King County, Snoqualmie Pass, 20 miles east of Snoqualmie Summit North side of Interstate 90
TERRAIN: Rugged Forest, Cascade Mountains
OBSERVED: Three of us were snowmobiling in about a foot of powder snow ,north of I-90. I went up a winding logging road by my self and came out of the trees overlooking a clear cut bowl open area. I stopped and waited for others to catch up and no headlights appeared, so i shut off my motor to see if i could hear them. I sat there waiting ,(kind of a moon lit night maybe 10-11-12-) We had ridden about a half hour back into the woods on log roads at about 30-50 mph so we were back in there maybe 30 miles. Back in '78 there weren't many snowmobiles back then in our area. We were the only ones back in there. Anyway, I was startled by a path that something had made in the snow. It was about 200 ft in front of me and ran 1/8 mi to the left and 1/8 mi to the right and over the hill, but the funny thing was it started or ended at a straight up rock cliff about 80 feet(?) tall. Very spooky. Heard the other mobiles coming so I stayed there and stopped them and pointed it out. We followed the road around to the cliff area where the path started and investigated. Something big had came down that sheer cliff and made a 10x10 compression area in the snow deep, went across the single lane log road, jumped down the other side (another 20 ft) leaving another compression area and went straight through the ravine over anything in its path including a big, big stump pile. What ever it was, it was on a mission. It went straight over everything. We talked about it and decided it was best to get out of there and headed back closer to the main rd. Nothing I know of could of scaled that cliff. Why not go around that jaggedly ass stump pile? I've done that area many many times and never seen anything like that since. Talked to one of the other riders and he says we found prints but I don't remember that. Too many years gone by. Remember we stepped next to where it stepped and didn't sink nearly as far as it did. It was heavy and the snow was fresh. The more we analyzed the spookier it got. Didn't hear anything.
