LOCATION:    Mountain Lake Wilderness, Jefferson National Forest,
                  Giles County, Virginia
 

TERRAIN:      Wooded
 
 

OBSERVED:  I was living in Blacksburg, VA at the time.  One Saturday morning, one of my co-workers and I went target shooting at a nearby firing range.  After we finished, he asked me if I wanted to hike out to the virgin patch.  since I had never seen a virgin forest before, I agreed.  We drove a few more miles into the mountains, until we came to a tralhead on the edge of the Mountain Lake Wilderness.

When we arrived there was a truck parked at the trailhead.  Several men and a teenage boy were at the truck.  When we stopped to say hello, they told us they had been running bear hounds, which were in a dog box in the back of the truck.  They had run one bear and treed him three times.  We decide after the morning he had the bear would want nothing more to do with people.

There was a Forest Service sign with the local trails and a map of the points of interest engraved in planks.  After a few minutes we started walking the trail to the "virgin patch".  The trail followed a ridge through second growth forest and ended at the edge of the old growth forest.

According to the map, this old growth area was about 100 acres.  But, we did not explore it any farther than the end of the trail.  From there we hiked about another half a mile to the War Spur Overlook where we stopped to rest and take in the view of the valley.  After about fifteen minutes, we started back to the truck.  Up to this point, nothing unusual had happened.

When we were about a quarter a mile from the trailhead, I got the feeling I was being watched.  Although that description of it seems too vague.  All of a sudden, I knew I was being watched, and I stopped dead in my tracks staring off into the woods trying to spot whatever was watching me.

XXXX walked right into my back and was a little annoyed at this behavior on my part.  We started down the trail again with me in the lead.  As we got closer to the truck, I remember remarking that there must have been a skunk nearby, because I could smell him.  I was trying to pay more attention to the ground in front of me, so I didn't walk up on the skunk and surprise him.

When we arrived at the trailhead my truck was the only vehicle in sight.  We had been gone for between one and two hours.  The bear hunters were gone.  The Forest Service sign had been smashed to pieces.  Most of the pieces were laying in a pile at the base of the posts.  Some were still bolted to the posts.  Those on the post showed the mark from where the sign had been hit by a rock.  The rock was among the parts of the board on the ground, and was more than a foot in diameter.  The tracks from the impact showed that it had hit the sign above my head.  I am almost six feet tall.  It was on a steep downward trajectory when it hit the sign and looked like it came from the other side of the road.  At the time, I thought the bear hunters had done this to keep hikers out of their hunting area.  But, something about the broken sign didn't seem right.  They could have easily driven their truck over the sign if they wanted to destroy it.  It was several months later when I came across a Bigfoot Web Site that showed reports of sightings in the area that I thought this might be the explanation for what happened.
