DATE:    March 1, 1978

TIME:     N/A

LOCATION:   Box Elder County, Utah

TERRAIN:    Mountains

OBSERVED:    I am not exactly sure of the date as this happened somewhere around 1978 or 1979. It was early spring and myself and a friend decided to go hiking up on the mountain. I always went hiking on the weekend and my friend Roger wanted to go with me on this hike. We were both around 15 years old at the time. After hiking for about half an hour up the mountain which is really quite steep Roger asked me when we were going to stop for a breath. I told him I have a favorite tree up on the bench that we can sit under and look over the valley and we only have just a short ways to go and we will rest there before going any further up. As we reached the bench, which was a level spot on the mountain, I began walking over to my tree and noticed it had been busted over near the base about 6" up. It was a cedar tree about 6 inches thick at the base. There was only one other tree on that bench but I did not care for it as the branches hung very low and kept pricking you in the back if you sat underneath it. I was very mad at first because I kept telling Roger on the way up that my tree was a great place to sit under and look over the valley, and now it was busted and lying over. The tree sat somewhat close next to a rock slide and I thought a big rock must have rolled down and smashed my tree. I did not see any boulder so I started looking at the actual break point on the tree and on the trunk and saw no evidence of any large rock striking the tree. After some mumbling I said we would nonetheless take a break. At just about that time I noticed a small, what I will refer too, leather, but not factory tanned leather, medicine bag hanging from  the limb of the other tree.
I yelled at Roger to come take a look at this. It had 2 crows feet or some other larger birds feet tied with a piece of sinew around the top. The bag was no bigger than a golf ball. I untied it from the tree and opened it up but it was only full of sage and other vegetation. I decided I would keep it but then after a few moments I thought it might be a bad idea as it was a medicine bag. We ate lunch and I tied that bag back onto the tree. I still couldn't figure out who would hike up here just to tie a bag to a tree, and this was not a well traveled spot at all. Well, as we finished lunch we started back up the mountain which began getting steep immediately. Within 50 feet of leaving our spot we encountered a snow drift that was still hanging on from winter. In that drift going uphill were bare footprints that were extremely large maybe 16". I told Roger holy S..T! those are bigfoot tracks! They had to be quite fresh because they were fairly sharp and the weather was warm. Not only that they were headed uphill and I could not stretch my legs that far apart between those footprints and remain standing. We followed those tracks for about 15 minutes before they left the snow and went to hard ground. After another couple of hours of hiking slowly and looking around we went back down to my broken tree. I know those tracks were fresh because the warm spring day had already started distorting those tracks when we got back to my tree. During school that week I kept regretting I did not take that bag and decided to go back up there and retrieve it. Saturday morning I raced through town and bee-lined right back up there but the bag was gone. I had asked Roger if he went up there after school and took the bag and he said he didn't. I have always believed since that day that bigfoot is not just a big dumb creature wandering through the woods aimlessly. Until we start thinking he may be smarter than your average deer or elk we might have a hard time finding him. I know this story sounds crazy but I'll take any polygraph, hypnosis test or anything else you can throw at me because what I just told you really happened.

Activities of Witness:   Roger was looking at the broken tree when I saw the bag in the other tree.

Description of Creature:  I never saw the creature just his footprints and what I believe was his medicine bag.

Other Notes:    N/A

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    I learned many years later that a policeman had seen a bigfoot creature around the same time (year) we saw those tracks, but I do not know if it was the same month because I do not know exactly what month it was myself
