Cherokee County, about 15 miles SE of Rusk
Texas, on the Angelina
River Bottoms.
TERRAIN:
Dense Woods
OBSERVED:
I was 14 years old at the time, and was staying over at a
friends house so we could go coon hunting that night. We went hunting
down in the bottoms
off the Angelina River. It was about 10:00 pm or so,
and we had just entered
the woods and was a good 150 foot into the woods.
My friend had a good hunting dog named "Bell". That was the
huntinest dog I have
ever seen, it would hunt anything, and smarter than any
dog I knew of at that time. We had an old Carbide Lamp, that would
cast off a small glow,
just enough to see some eyes to shoot at, but nothing
that would cast any light out no more than a few feet. Anyway,
my friend, said "Bell
hunt"! Bell ran out for about 20 feet then came back.
We thought she done went crazy, so he said in a more firmer voice
"Bell hunt"! We
were slowly stepping forward this whole time, anyway Bell
went out about 15 feet then came back and we were stumbling over
her as she was under
our legs. He said in a more firmer voice now "Bell
hunt"! Bell ran
out about 10 feet now and came right back. We were
really puzzled by this.
So he got really firm as he was really getting aggravated
of the wy his dog was behaving, and he really got loud "BELL
GO HUNT"! Bell
stepped out about 2 steps in front looking back at us in
a nervous fashion, and
then all of a sudden something in front of us broke
out crashing through the brush and Bell ran the other way. Whatever
it was it was so big
it sounded as big as a cow crashing through the underbrush.
We didn't have any idea of what it could have been, so we
always just said it
must have been a panther. But this wasn't normal
actions for a panther,
not making all that noise as a panther isn't big enough
to make that much noise. Anyway Bell wasn't scared of no panther
or even a cow, or any
other animal that was domesticated or what we would
hunt in the woods. It wasn't anything that we could figure out,
and to this day I have
wondered what it could have been. We didn't have Bigfoot's
in East Texas back in 1945. So nothing like that even crossed
our minds. But
if we did have them in East Texas, I can say now, that it
very well could have been a Bigfoot. We followed Bell out of the
woods as we knew that
whatever it was we didn't have anything to take it down.
All we had was a single shot .22 that we had to dig the hulls out
with a pocket knife
after firing it.
Other
Notes: Nothing really, Dog
wouldn't hunt, and something really big crashed
through the underbrush leaving the area in which we were in. It had
the Dog so spooked that
she wouldn't even attempt to hunt, and vacated the
scene immediately as the thing began to crash in the other
direction.
