                 led to this new investigation.

OBSERVED:  While we were investigating the Upshur County incident, some local people told us of a couple down the road named XXXXXX who was experiencing strange occurrences around their house.  We investigated further.

XXXX XXXXXX and his wife live in a mobile home approximately 1.15 miles north of the Upshur County sighting.  The XXXXXX described a myriad of strange occurrences since they moved into their present location.  They described on many occasions hearing a long loud moan coming from the top of the hill on their property.  They said that once the moaning started at nights, it would last for intervals of about a week.  They reported many times hearing movement outside their house which backs up against a small creek which runs through their 40 acre property.  They reported charging out their back door, once firing a shotgun, and hearing a large creature crashing through the woods as it ran away.  Approximately 10 days ago, Mrs. XXXXXX saw what she described as large glowing red eyes in the woods at night behind her goat pen as she looked outside to investigate more noises.

They reported that on many occasions, they would sit out on their back patio on quiet, still evenings and hear trees breaking up on the hill.  Mr. XXXXXX, a Viet Nam vet, reported that many times he would be working on the back patio at night and get the uneasy feeling of being watched.  So much so, that would stop whatever he was doing and close the window and draw the shades.  He also reports that on several occasions around the deer stands on the hill where he and his sons hunt, they would hear what sounded like large creatures walking around them in the early mornings and late evenings.

Mrs. XXXXXX said about a year ago she was sitting in her vehicle at night with her dog and her dog's back bristled but didn't bark or growl (she said her dog never barks and that's why they don't take her deer hunting because they wouldn't know where she is if she walked off.)  After she noticed the dog acting strange, she smelled an odor that smelled like a sewer. She said it was really strong and it didn't last long.  Mrs. XXXXXX also reports seeing a large “hunched-over” creature cross an opening four months ago while sitting at their deer camp reading a book.  She thought at the time it must have been a homeless person living out in the woods.  She also reports hearing wood-knocking on occasion.

The XXXXXX's home is at the base of a hill on their property, which crests approximately 200+ ft above the surrounding area.  It is a steep hill appearing to be a 40-degree grade.  Mr. XXXXXX took us to the location of the closest deer stand, which is at the start of the incline.  The area is somewhat heavily wooded in most places with pine, hardwood, yaupon and Spanish mulberry.  There is much deer sign and hogs are running the creek.  Approximately 50 yds from the deer stand, we discovered a most impressive tree marker.  (Took photo.)  Two pine trees 10 ft apart, approximately 30 ft tall and 6 – 7 inches in diameter were broken off.  One at the 7-1/2 ft level and one at the 9 ft level.  Both trees were laying on the ground and crossed at the end where the tops were and formed an arrow pointing down the hill toward the XXXXXX's house.  The breaks were fresh and the tops of the trees still had some green to them.  This has happened since the last ice storm.  We continued up the steep hill.  Part way up, Kelly stayed back with Mr. XXXXXX and I continued up and eventually to the top of the hill.  The trail up and across the top of the hill is wide and well worn.  However, Mr. XXXXXX insists that nobody ever goes up there and if any of his neighbors did, they would call and tell him they would be on his property.  I found one other old but substantial limb break as the trail crossed the top of the hill.

The XXXXXX's also report that people in the area believe that “something” lives in the caves on the other side of the old strip mine that is adjacent to the hill on the XXXXXX’s property.  I hiked to the property line and looked out across the strip mine.  I couldn’t see any sign of anything crossing the mine onto the XXXXXX property at that point, but something could conceivably travel around the backside of the hill and come up the other side.  Once again, the path across the top of the hill is wide and well worn.

I urged the XXXXXX's to stay in contact with me and let me know if anything else started happening.  I consider this to potentially be an ongoing investigation.
