OBSERVED: Group of teenagers, including myself, were camping out in the woods. It was moderately cold, clear night. We had constructed a "fort" made of pine tree limbs, straw which was about 6 ft x 6 ft by about 3 ft tall. We had spent weeks building it and were spending the night in it. We had a fire just outside the fort. As it became late, we moved into the fort to sleep. About 10 minutes after doing so, we heard screams that seemed to come from very close by. We also smelled a very foul smell, as though something had died nearby. We heard grunting and growling in between the screams. We then heard what appeared to sound like something running. Having hunted most of my life, it sounded like something on two feet. It came closer to our fort and screamed again. The most puzzling thing about it was that our fire was extinguished almost instantly. After that, whatever it was left us. We waited about 30 minutes in total silence, then moved single file back down our trail to the closest neighborhood, which was about two miles away.
Additional
things: The screams and smell were the
two things that stood out the most. The scream was unlike any animal I've
heard before.
Activities
of Witness: We had walked
up the closed iron ore road and came back to camp. Probably walked about
a mile or so, during which a friend and myself were walking in the rear
of the group. I stopped several times thinking some older high school guys
were stalking us with intent to scare us. But the joke was never pulled
and neither of us thought much about it by the time we got back to our
fort.
Description
of Creature: Did not see it.
Other
Notes: After arriving
at the home of one of our friends, we spent the night in his garage and
made a pact between ourselves to never speak of it again. I've since lost
contact with the guys I was with that night. I think one of them still
lives in Morris County near Omaha.
Other
(Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:
There were several reports in the area during the time. Namely, one instance
near New Diana which was reported in the Longview Morning Journal.
