TIME:
10:00 pm
LOCATION:
Milam County, Texas
TERRAIN:
River bottom area
OBSERVED:
When I was 15 years old My grandparents, brother and I had a strange
encounter with what I now think
was a bigfoot. We were camping in the little
river bottom lands for a few days
of hunting and fishing. For the first two
days nothing unusual happened,
but on our third day of camping (the
17th), things changed. That
night about 10:00 PM my grandfather and I decided
to head down to the river and try
to catch a few fish for tomorrow's dinner
while my grandmother and brother
retired to bed. When my
grandfather and I finally
reached the river (about 400 feet from our camp) I
decided to walk upstream about
150 feet to a deep hole in the river known to
be a hotspot for bass. I
was there for approx. 15 minutes when I heard the
bellowing of a deer far away but
on the other side of the river followed by
the loudest scream I've ever heard
in the fifteen years of my life, it was
ear shattering even from that distance
and I was scared!. I could hear the
breaking of limbs and the crashing
of something BIG through the
brush. Something was chasing
the deer and the deer was terrified!. The
bellowing and screaming was growing
louder so I assumed the dear and
whatever was chasing it was heading
towards the river. as the deer and
whatever it was got closer to the
river the bellowing and screaming grew
even louder and more intense.
From the sounds I could predict that the deer
and whatever was chasing
it would come out to the river about a 75 feet
downstream from me, between me
and where my grandfather was fishing. I had a
lantern but the light did not reach
that far because the woods were thick at
the rivers edge blocking my view
so all I could do was listen. The deer broke
through the woods and jumped into
the river with a loud splash followed by a
louder splash right behind it.
The river is not very wide at this point (25
feet) but it's deep and whatever
made the second splash was BIG and HEAVY!.
I could hear the bellowing deer
and the splashing of water and then it
suddenly stopped. There was
something else in the water and it was tired, in
the still of the night, I could
hear it breathing, it was breathing heavily. I
was so scared I couldn't say a
word or call out to my grandfather (later I
found out my grandfather was not
at his spot because he went back to camp to
get his cigarettes so I was alone!)
I could hear whatever it was in the water
swim to the bank (it sounded just
like a person swimming, kicking of feet
etc.) and walk onto shore, I could
hear the water dripping off of it as it
walked up to the high bank of the
river. I heard three or four large thumping
sounds like the thing was slamming
the deer on the ground, after about 5
minutes it went back into the water,
crossed the river and went back into
the woods. At this point I was
in tears because I was so afraid. A few minutes
later I could hear my grandparents
and brother screaming my name but I was
still to scared to speak.
As they were coming down the trail towards me they
came across a large puddle of blood
and a deer's head, my grandfather touched
and it was warm. There was also
a awful stench in the area, it smelled like
garbage. When I saw the flashlight
coming down the trail I yelled for my
grandmother, I was in tears and
shaking badly. They all had rifles and I
guess the protection I felt now
calmed me down quite a bit but I was still
scared. I sat down for a
few minutes trying to tell them what happened but I
was unable to. I finally
got up and we walked downstream to the deer's head,
I've seen dead deer before so it
didn't shock me but we were all wondering
what could have done this.
My grandparents lived, hunted and fished in this
county all their lives and they
never saw or heard (they heard the screams
from camp), nothing like this before.
Through my sobbing I asked my
grandfather what could have done
it but he didn't know. My grandfather looked
for tracks but all he found was
skid marks in the mud where something was
slipping and sliding to get up
and down the bank. My grandfather was scared
and so were the others so we broke
camp and left that night, we never talked
about it again.
