Report Posted To GCBRO Web Site On  July 1, 2008

DATE:    May 17, 2008

TIME:     6:30 PM

LOCATION:   Live Oak County, Texas

TERRAIN:    Wooded with River Bottoms

OBSERVED:    WE HAVE HAD TWO IDENTICAL EXPERIENCES WHERE WE DID NOT SEE ANYTHING BUT, HAVE HEARD WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A TREE BEING HIT WITH A LARGE LOG.  WITHIN SECONDS OF HEARING THE TWO HITS, THE SOUNDS OF A MASSIVE TREE CRASHING TO THE GROUND IS HEARD.  ON BOTH OCCASIONS,  THE SOUND CAME FROM THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE RIVER WHERE WE WERE SITTING.

MAY 17TH WAS THE FIRST TIME WE HEARD WHAT WE THOUGHT TO BE A LARGE BULL WALKING THROUGH THE BRUSH AS WE COULD HEAR THE BRUSH SNAPPING.  WE WERE BOTH SEARCHING THE RIVER BANK ACROSS FROM US EXPECTING AN ANIMAL TO COME OUT OF THE BRUSH TO WATER.  AFTER A FEW SECONDS WE HEARD THE SOUND OF THE TREE BEING HIT, FOLLOWED BY THE LOUD SNAPPING OF A LARGE TREE TRUNK AND THEN THE CRASHING SOUND LIKE IT IS BREAKING OTHER TREES ON ITS WAY DOWN COULD BE HEARD.  WE WERE PRETTY STARTLED AT THE SOUND.  MY HUSBAND MADE THE COMMENT THAT IT WAS DEATHLY QUIET THAT  PARTICULAR EVENING. NOT A BIRD, OWL, CRICKET COULD BE HEARD.  WE STAYED AT THE CAMP SITE UNTIL 9:00 P.M. THAT NIGHT WITH KEROSENE LANTERNS USED FOR LIGHTING. MY HUSBAND HAD AN UNEASY FEELING AND STATED THAT HE FELT LIKE WE WERE BEING WATCHED.

Activities of Witness:   WE ARE USUALLY SITTING ON THE BANK FISHING QUIETLY.

Description of Creature:  WE HAVE NOT SIGHTED ANYTHING AS OF YET.

Other Notes:    THE UNUSUALLY QUIET SURROUNDINGS EACH TIME SEEM REALLY STRANGE.   THERE ARE LOTS OF WILD TURKEYS AND OWLS IN THE AREA.  I LIKE TO CALL THEM UP JUST TO SEE HOW CLOSE THEY COME TO US.  BUT, ON THESE TWO INSTANCES, NONE OF THESE CREATURES CAN BE HEARD.

Other (Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:    ON MAY 31, 2008 AGAIN WE WERE ON THE SAME RIVER BUT FURTHER NORTH ON THE BANK FROM WHERE WE HEARD IT THE FIRST TIME. THIS TIME IT WAS EARLIER IN THE AFTERNOON AT APPROXIMATELY 5:00 PM.  WE HAD NOT HAD TIME TO SETUP OUR CHAIRS ON THE RIVER BANK WHEN HEARD THE SAME HITTING SOUND FOLLOWED BY THE CRASHING TREE.  ONCE WE HEARD THE FAMILIAR HITTING SOUND WE WERE BOTH SEARCHING THE TREE TOPS ACROSS THE BANK TO SEE IF WE COULD CATCH SIGHT OF A FALLING TREE BUT, NOTHING COULD BE SEEN.

Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments On 6/18/08 the witness added: Last night, we were visiting with some friends who visit the XXXXX River with us often. and their son informed me that a friend of a friend of his had heard the same sound of a tree being hit and then crashing along the same river but further south of where we heard it.

We do a lot of hog hunting at night in the same area and are definitely keeping an eye open for whatever this is making this noise.
