OBSERVED:
My family and some friends of ours had a deer lease outside of XXXXX Texas.
I want to say it was at least xx miles outside of the city limits as it
was a nice little drive to get into town. I am not sure of the acreage
of the land but it was a large piece of property that had a creek running
through the middle of it, and the backside of the property backed up to
the national forest. There were several open fields on the property
that we had planted oats in, and we had a dozen or more stands scattered
around the area. The only area we never built any stands was on the
backside of the property across the creek by the national forest.
There were several old stands there that not been used in several
years, but no one ever explained why. Being 11-12 years old at the
time I was curious at this and asked the man who leased the
property to us.
He simply stated that that part
of the property had a "creepy" feeling to it, and very few people
ever hunted it. He was right about the "creepy feeling. Right
after we got the lease we went back in that area to search for deer
sign, and possible places to put stands. We had no sooner crossed
the creek when it felt like we were being watched. I was with my
dad, his best friend, and his son. We were all armed with shotguns
but still felt a little uneasy. We looked around for about an hour
and hadn't found much deer sign so we headed back to camp at the front
of the property. The feeling of being watched stayed with us until
we had crossed the creek on our way back to camp.
We didn't go back there much after
that. This was in the early 80's several years later while night
hunting for rabbits me and my brother-in-law had an incident happen to
us that we couldn't explain. It was around 8:00 at night and we had
decided to walk and shine a spotlight into the oat fields to see if we
could shoot some rabbits. We were close to the creek area when my
brother-in-law asked me if I had heard anything. I listened and heard
what I thought was someone walking up the trail. What was unusual
about this was that it was coming from the other side of the creek,
and the only way back there was down the trail which we were on.
No one in camp had left before us so it wasn't one of them. We listened
for a few minutes and realized the sound was coming closer. Now
it was a cloudy night, not much moonlight, and who ever was walking down
the trail was not using a flashlight, at least not that we could
see. My brother-in-law and
myself trail stepped off the trail into the brush kneeled down turned off
our light and listened. We heard someone or something cross the creek
and then it stopped about 400 yards
away from where we were.
All was quiet for several minutes. Then we heard whatever it was
cross the
creek again and head back in the
direction it came from. We didn't stay around long after that.
We hightailed it back to camp. Everyone was there no one was missing.
We told them what had happened but they dismissed it as being a deer or
a coyote. I have my doubts about this as it sounded like a person
walking on two legs. My brother-in-law who was a big man, 6'6 375
lbs, was also a little rattled by this, and he did not rattle easily.
To this day I can not explain it, and tragically my brother-in law died
unexpectedly last year but we talked about it often and wondered what it
might have been. There was no smell that we could notice but it was deathly
quiet that night.
