DATE: Either '93 or '94
TIME: Approx. 10:30-11:00 a.m.
LOCATION: Freestone county, Texas. Outside little town of Oakwood, TX.
TERRAIN: Wooded
OBSERVED: I don't remember the exact date, but it was early November, the beginning of deer season either '93 or '94. I was deer hunting in a fairly wooded area. The place is covered with pines and sand, common to East Texas. I got out of my stand about 10:30 or so feeling kind of frusterated because I'd seen no deer that morning which was very unusual. There was a large oat patch in front of my deer stand about 3/4 acre wide by about 2 arces long. I decided to walk down the edge of the oat patch up to my corn feeder to scout for fresh tracks. I had my rifle slung over my shoulder and was walking facing the ground. I had gone about 25 yards when to my left I heard a very loud crack. Realizing that what I heard was a tree falling over, I was frightened to know that there was something out there big enough to do that to a tree. I crouched down and listened.
Suddenly I heard loud thudding sounds on the ground as if something very big was running in the other direction. The woods being so thick in this particular part, my vision into the woods was almost zero. I heard a humming noise that kept getting louder and louder. Then all at once, bursting from the brush was a large mass of hornets. Being fully clothed nearly from head to toe, all that was uncovered was my face and hands. I dropped down and in doing so I dropped my rifle which landed with a loud thud. I put my face down into the ground and wrapped my arms around my head until the last of the buzzing was gone. When I got up, I automatically observed that my rifle stock had a small split in it. I decided to take a look to see what I had heard. Digging my way through the thick brush, I could see up ahead about 15 yards, a tree that had fallen over. Broken would probably better describe it. When I approached, I found several things. A tree that had been broken about 6-7 foot off the ground, an empty hornets nest and something else very disturbing.
At the base of the tree, there lay a yearling deer that had been mutilated. Rather disturbing. It had one broken leg that had been twisted, broken back, very obvious. It was broken so that it lay in nearly a fetal position. There was one small incision in the stomach area about big enough to stick two of my fingers in. I've read a little about bigfoot and their behavior since then and understand that this is normal behavior. The process was not completed yet probably because of the hornets would be my best guess.
Underneath
the deer I found a rock that had been broken and was jagged on one side
and covered with blood. It was too quiet for me so I decided it best
to leave. As I stood I got a very eerie feeling and the hair stood
up on the back of my neck. I took several leaps before I was out
of the brush and jogged 1/4 mile back to where my 4-wheeler was parked
and got back to camp in a hurry. I told my father and grandfather
what I'd found and they both agreed that it was probably a poacher.
I've never seen poachers do anything like this before.
