OBSERVED:
I was camping this past June 15-17, 2012 near Dayton, TN in the Laurel/Snow
pocket wilderness with a friend I once worked with. I had read about a
sighting in this area that occured several years ago. We hiked in about
2-3 miles and set up camp. It was early afternoon, so we hiked to Laurel
falls. we came back to camp and settled in for the night. My friend went
to bed and I played with the fire. I got the idea to try some tree knocks,
for fun. I did a series of 3 and heard nothing. I tried another set of
3 and from the NNW I heard a distinct knock. Was not an echo, it had a
more hollow sound than mine. I was using a green stick about 2 inches in
diameter. I tried another 2 sets of 3 knocks and never heard anymore.
I
went to bed, about 10 minutes later, I heard what sounded like a medium
sized rock land near our camp. It did not sound like a limb, but a rock
that hit and rolled a little. Soon, it began to rain very hard for about
an hour. I did not see or hear anything else. The next day I looked around
camp and did not see any rocks that looked like what I had heard or any
other signs. I did look for footprints, nothing.
We
hiked the next day, across the creek, I did not see any prints or signs.
We camped in the same spot the next night, I tried the tree knocks again,
but did not hear anything. I did not try any vocalizations, now I wish
I had.
Additional
Info: it was near a
powerline right of way

Other
Notes: When I said I
was playing with the fire, in fact the wood was wet and I was having a
hard time building a large fire, so there was very little light.
Other
(Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:
I have read of a sighting there in about 2003
