REPORT RECEIVED: From the GCBRO Online Reports Submissions Form

DATE:  11-04-98

TIME:  About 11:00a.m.

LOCATION:  Greenbrier, Tennessee, Robertson County.  On our farm while out hunting.

TERRAIN:  Mostly Wooded with Scattered Pastures

OBSERVED:    On Nov. the 4th while i was out Whitetail Deer hunting i came across a very large very dead 8
point buck.  The deer's' throat was completely ripped out and other parts of its' body were also ripped off.  The reason this is strange is because no hunter here in Greenbrier would shoot and abandon a deer like this and if they did they would at least take the 8 point rack.  Anyway about this time i began getting this chill like something very big was watching me.  Now i'm a pretty big guy 6 foot 1 and 240 lbs and i work out most of the time so, not much can scare me. Anyway i started looking around the woods for signs for anyone else.  I didn't see anything, but i still had that feeling so i started backing away when i heard something yell. This was like no noise i have ever heard i can't even begin to describe what it sounded like, but a mountain lion or a bobcat yell is nothing compared to what this sounded like.  This yell scared me half to death, slowly i cocked my Remington 308 and turned around. There was nothing there.  That's when I got even more scared.  I slowly began making my way back to my truck which was a good 500 yards away.  The whole way there something was at the edge of the woods following me.  At the time i could only make out a big black form which had to stand at least 7 feet tall, if not taller.  When i finally got to my truck i put my rifle inside and pulled out my 357 mag.  I then got in my truck and started it, then came the biggest scare of my life i reached into my floorboard to lock my truck in four
wheel drive (cause i was in a big mud puddle) and when i looked back up and out my passenger window, there it was the ugliest and scariest thing i ever saw.  It looked kind of like a gorilla but then again it didn't, the facial features were not at all right, and the thing walked upright not on its' knuckles.  At this point i began to yell and holler, then it let out its' bloodcurdling yell. I threw my truck in drive and was outta of there as fast as i could go in the terrain.

On the way back I had to stop because there was a good sized tree laying across the dirt road that was not there on my way there to hunt.  So i got on my CB radio and got one of my friends to come out there with his guns and chain saw.

About 15 minutes later he got there and started cutting up the tree.  Around the fallen tree were big footprints that were bigger than my foot and i wear a size 14.  He finally got the tree cut up and we started to leave when the yell came again.  When he heard it he went white.  I asked if he knew what it was and he said no but it had killed some of his cattle, he was just afraid that everyone would think he was crazy.  Later on i asked him how his cattle had died and he said that their throats were ripped out.  When we got to the end of the dirt road to go
on the main road we looked in my field right next to my neighbors barn and saw four or five deer.  I said i might as well go ahead and get me one so i loaded up my rifle and took careful aim at a very large 6 point buck.  All of a sudden all the deer stood straight up and looked in the direction behind them, my buddy Josh said "Oh
my God" and I asked what it was cause i had my attention set on the deer.  He said "raise your scope about four inches" I did and saw the thing again.  This time it was scary but not as much cause that part of the road runs on a high slope and the thing was a good 700 yards away in our field. The Deer finally scattered and ran but the thing kept going toward the barn.  I realized after a few minutes that my neighbor Joel had just had two mares have foals that weren't even 2 weeks old. I didn't want it to kill them so i fired a shot in front of it hoping to scare it off.  It didn't it just gazed in our direction then started running toward us.  Josh hopped in his truck and told me to get in mine, but i was too scared to move, however i managed to fire off another shot hoping to scare it off, all it did was make the thing even madder.  So i hopped in my truck and we took off to Joel's' house, informed him what happened then we went to my house to call the game warden and tell him about we had saw.  Josh went inside to get the cordless phone while i was busy measuring my truck to where the thing had stood.  Then i heard some shots being fired from Joel's' so i ran in and had Josh call over there but there was no answer so we got all of my guns which consisted of a 10 and a 12 gauge my 30.06 my 30.30 and of course my 308 was already out there.

We went back outside and began to get in my truck when all my dogs (2 Chows and 1 Rottweiller) began whining and then they ran under the porch whimpering.  I told Josh that i didn't like the way that looked.  About then the thing yelled again and burst out of the trees not 40 feet from us.  The thing was not human that we knew so we shot it.  I know we hit it because it fell to the ground and started crawling away. I told Josh to stop shooting because i didn't know what it was.  Later when the game warden arrived i told him what had happened and he said he had answered numerous reports lately pretty much regarding the same thing.  He wasn't sure what to think about it until I showed him the blood and tracks.  We followed the tracks to a creek about half a mile away from my house where they were joined by other tracks of the same kind and they went off into the creek. We have heard of the thing since then,  for example a week after this event my Rottweiller was found dead in a tree with it's throat ripped out, also there have been numerous cattle been found dead in the same way.

Also one of Joel's foals died during the night under the same circumstances.  Its mother had to be put to sleep because it had gone into shock over whatever it saw. Joel was all right all he did was manage to scare it over to my house.  I still have seen signs of the thing a track here or sometimes we find dead cows, and household pets that have all died in the same way.  Also i measured where the thing had stood against my truck and it measured at 7 feet and 11 inches.

Other Notes:  I always seemed to hear a thumping noise like something banging against tree each time
before the thing yelled.

Other Other Notes:  There has been a legend down her called The Critter of Carr Creek.  It is supposed to
be about a wild creature who looks like a man but is a monkey or something.  I never believed in it much but now i am not so sure.
