TIME:             4:30 P.M. to 6:00 P.M.
 

LOCATION:   Near Greeneville, Tennessee, Greene County
 

TERRAIN:     Mountains
 

OBSERVED:     My girl friend, a friend and I were going to scout out a campsite
I use occasionally.   I had planned a winter campout with some friends and
some co-workers.   We left a little late in the day.   It takes me 1 1\2 hr to
reach this place.  Must have been about 3, I had been begging my
girlfriend to go all day.  We arrived at the bottom with no problems.  We
started up the road and could get glimpses now and then of the summit and
it was snow covered, but I had prepared for this, having a Jeep Wrangler
and chains.

We made it to the snow line and the road was covered with 5 to
eight inches of snow\slush which from the 1\2 inch tire tracks in it was
freezing solid at night.  I kept on driving at a slower pace but at one spot,
the slope of the road combined with a area of thick ice, kicked the tail of
my (Jeep) towards the steep embankment.  I stopped immediatly.  I thought this
would be a good time for my chains, much to my girlfriends disapproval.

I wanted badly to reach the top, so my friend and I quickly mounted the chains
and I told them to walk up the road to the next flat [about 100 yards or so].
I didn't want them in the Jeep or around  it in case it slid around.   Well,
Murphy's law presides in my life, so when I hit the gas, the chain on the
passengers side broke an ripped my brakeline off and my e-brake for that side!
There I was on the side of a drop off no more than 1000 ft or more into the woods.

So far this is just a bad wheelin' trip.  This is about the time my girlfriend and my
friend heard the noise...about 50 to 100 yards up the hill [directly above me].
She heard a loud snort!! repeated every few seconds followed by a slight
pause.  [I know it sounds like a buck deer but  be patient]   Back to my
dilemma.  I took the chain off the ailing axle of the jeep and punched it!
I made it up to the flat where my friends were and turned it towards the
uphill side then backed it up so it was level and I could easily turn it
downhill.

I killed the motor and then my girl friend asked me if I had heard the sound.
I said no [I was preoccupied with being on the side of a mountain with no damn brakes!].  I was taking off the tire when I heard the sound, a repeditive snort up
the heavily wooded slope, then it was answered below us, and really
close.  This continued for a few minutes.  [I was thinking it could be a
wild hog?? deer?? I had camped here before]  Then the sounds changed the
best I can describe it is a bird noise but much deeper  [I could feel the
resonation in the calls telling me what was doing this had BIG lungs]

I hurridly clamped off the ailing brake line and re-attached the tire an we
got out of there.  I used 1st gear, 4 low all the way down.  We passed
another vehicle going up and they wouldnt stop when we flagged to them. I
really couldn't figure what i had just heard.  It was scary enough when it
was just snorts but when it changed up and down the hill it really
sounded bad, like a warning of sorts.   I had camped here a year
earlier in a snowstorm an I didnt realize until I had gone home and
downloaded satellite photos of the area that the area i heard the noise
uphill was about 1\2 a mile from where I had camped before, [it is very
steep].

I had also camped there a year an a half before in the summer an my
kids an I had seen something in the high alpine field with a spotlight
while we were driving at night.  It appeared to be eyes like a deer but
they changed color yellow to red [this kinda spooked me at the time] and
we stayed close to camp in the field.  This area is an abandoned ski lodge
on one of the highest peaks in the area.   It is not populated and the
north view is the Tennessee valley [Greeneville, Jonesborough, Mosheim,
other cities are viewable here] but to the south, nothing can be seen at night,
no lights but the distant Asheville N.C. lights 30 to 50 miles away.
 

ACTIVITIES OF WITNESS(ES):   My girlfriend and friend walked up the icy road to a flat spot (where) I could safely stop.

RESEARCHERS NOTES:    Bird sounds, strange whistling bird calls, some very shrill, others deeper and more resonate have been noted in other areas of TN with bigfoot signs and activity, especially at night.  This sighting report is currently under investigation.
 

OTHER SIGHTINGS IN THIS AREA?:   Just what I have already said.  I know of no other "hominid sighting there"  [I hate it when people say that] but what a place for one
to live!!
