LOCATION:     Great Smoky Mountains National Park,
                  Cades Cove and Elk Mount Tennessee,
                  Blount County
 

TERRAIN:      Mountains
 
 

OBSERVED:        Greetings.  We just got back from a vacation in the Great Smoky Mountains.  This is actually XXXX's wife typing this, but we both wanted to tell you about what happened.  Yesterday, February 10, we had decided to spend the day in the mountains just taking pictures and relaxing.

We had stopped by the Sugarlands visitor center on our way to see Cades Cove.  It was
about one in the afternoon.  He noticed some informatin on a place called Elkmont and made the comment that he wanted to go check it out and see what all it was.  I agreed, but for some reason had a weird feeling about going up there.  I don't really know if
it was about going to Elkmont, but it was after he said that when I started not wanting to go further into the mountains.  Well, we got near the turn off to go to Elkmont and the feeling was getting stronger.

We noticed that the park had closed the area for camping, but the gate up the road was opened.  We turned on the road and met a Jeep coming from the Elkmont area, that was the only vehicle we saw up there. I didn't want to say anything to XXXXX about
not wanting to be there, because from the way he sounded, he really wanted to go see what was up there.

 We were both pretty quiet when I thought I heard something like a loud growling scream.  We were going about 15 miles an hour just looking at the water and
scenery. Since we were going so slow, I thought that maybe I could hear it again, and I did.  I heard it a total of 3 times. There was a few seconds between the first one and the second one, but the third one was very close to the second.

XXXXX noticed that something was weird because he asked me what was
wrong.  I told him nothing, just thinking that it was hopefully my imagination.  He started to get a look on his face that made me think something was wrong.
Finally, I told him that something wasn't right and I wanted to go back.  I cracked the window, trying to see if I could hear anything else, but telling XXXXXX it was to get some air.  When I cracked the window, both us commented on the horrible smell that came into the car. It honestly smelled like a toilet line had backed up and sewage was everywhere.

Also, there were absolutely no sounds other than our car.  All day we had hear birds chirping.  Even at the visitors center which was only 6 miles from Elkmont, there were birds chirping, but not on this road.  He said that the smell could have been one of them.  I told him that I had a strange feeling and that was when he turned the
car around right in the middle of the road.

We never saw anything, but we did smell that funny smell (which we had not smelled all day and didn't smell after that incident), and I did hear that noise.  It could have
been a bear, but it honestly sounded like the recordings that I have heard on TV and on websites.

Needless to say that XXXXX, who has believed his whole life, got our little neon out of that area as fast as he could. Before, I did not believe that these things were real.  I honestly thought that it was just people trying to occupy their time and just some story that someone made up along time ago to keep children from going into the woods.  But now, I think that my mind is a little more open to the idea that Bigfoot exists.

 I promise this, I am no longer going to laugh at the stories I read.  I don't know what was really out there, but I do think that it was something that maybe did not want us in that area.  Please, let us know what you think.  Thank you and sorry that this is such
a long story, I just didn't want to leave anything out.
