OBSERVED:
Ok here goes ! This happened to me and a friend of mine back around 1998.
There are many, many bikes trails in this part of South Carolina. There
is certain trail that my buddy and I used to frequent quite often back
then. I believe that particular trail is called "Turkey Creek", probably
for the reason this creek runs right beside the parking lot next to the
bridge that must be crossed to get to the parking lot. This bike trail,
as far as many of the other trails in the area, is quite technical and
is definitely a good work out for the short 7 miles in length that it represents.
As I mentioned the trail is 7 miles in one way, and 7 miles back out to
the parking lot. the terrain their consists of small hills, not foot hills
per say, but tall none the less, approx. 50 to 75 feet high, running left
to right, with the bike trail running front to back weaving in and out
around these hills, if that makes any sense? The area is heavily wooded
as it is part of the Sumter National forest. Not sure of the size of this
area, but it has to be several thousand acres in size as I have ridden
many different trails here and the forest stretches from the lake (Lake
Thurmond) all the way to Augusta Georgia. This area can be pulled up on
google maps if need be. Any who, we had reached the end of the trail and
were probably half way back , or more to the parking lot (approx. 3.5 to
2.5 miles left?) when we stopped to catch our breath. we sat there for
a second drinking water, and were about to start back peddling when we
heard this scream, or yell, or something come from one of the hilltops.
we both looked at each other like, what the hell was that, when another
scream came from a hilltop adjacent to the first sound. We were already
tired from the 9 or so miles we had already ridden , but we were hauling
butt to get the hell outta there. I guess I should mention that this trail
is heavily canopied with trees, so even though it was around 6pm in the
summer, maybe even a little later, because of the shade, it was kind
of darkish. you have to be careful riding this trail if you get on it too
late without a light for your bike as you will be riding out in the dark.
Well that's my story ! I have been friends with this guy for 25 yrs. or
more and we still bring it up from time to time. He has since had hip replacement
surgery so he isn't much into mountain biking these days, at least not
on the trails. If you need to contact me about this, please feel free !
I pass this area all the time, as it is on the way to Lake Thurmond were
I fish quite frequently. Thanks for the time to post this, been a long
time coming !
ADDITIONAL THINGS:
Nothing, except that when we heard the noise, we freaked out, hauled butt
out of there, and my buddy ran through a spider web, a big one, Writing
Spider, I believe, and he freaked out ! That was funny !!!!!!!!!!!!! Saw
a deer bedding down for the night, and it ran when it heard us barreling
up the trail, that freaked him out as well, the deer got up and ran. What
ever was in those woods that evening scared us !!! We rode that particular
trail for years before this incident and never heard anything ????? Now
that I think back, right before we heard the sounds, it was very quite,
no crickets, birds, or anything ??? This area is known for it's cricket
sounds in the summer months ??????
