TIME:

LOCATION:
Dutchess County, New York
TERRAIN:
Rocky, Old growth hardwood forest w old farmsteads there.
OBSERVED: The year was 1995. I remember that year very well because it was the year I graduated w my undergrad in engineering and decided to take some time off to section hike the Bear Mountain area of the AT. My parents had dropped me off a few days earlier further south on the trail and I was walking through a fairly remote area wo people or other hikers seen for quite a while. It was REALLY HOT that year and quite dry in the creek beds, keeping hydrated was a problem. Every day though, in the afternoon a thunderstorm would roll through cooling things off for awhile until the rain stopped, then your eyeballs would steam up owing to the fierce humidity thereafter. TOUGH HIKING!!!
Additional
things: As I was working my way up a switchback
in the left-to-right contour (up some BIG-ASS rocks) I was watching the
woods further up the trail and to my right (being a hunter and general
outdoors man, I always look for game). Anyways, as I was looking up and
to the right, I saw this large *guy* turn to his right and walk deeper
into the woods. He was about 200' away when I saw him and the sighting
only lasted about 2-3sec, but the size of his shoulders is what struck
me. HUGE! I suppose it could have been a football player in a gray jacket
but the temps were already in the 90s by then and I can't imagine why anyone
would be out wearing a jacket.
Activities
of Witness: Hiking up a steep
incline
Description
of Creature: Large shoulders, HUGE!
Mostly the right shoulder as he turned away. Didn't see the head much.
Saw the movement first. Beech-bark gray coat that quickly blended into
the rest of the trees. Perfect color of camo vs. the gray of the trees
of the environment, then he was gone. Never saw *him* again. Wasn't "freaked
out" until later on that night. Stayed in the lean-to w other people that
night.
Other
Notes: I think that
if there are BFs in that area, they are VERY accustomed to people and staying
just out of sight. On the occasion they are seen it is only very briefly.
Other
(Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:
Yes, the area is a hotbed of BF activities over the years. Lots of rocky
areas interspersed w old farmsteads, wood and domestic residential areas.
Only about 50 miles from NYC!
