REPORT RECEIVED: From the GCBRO Online Reports Submissions Form

TIME: Approximately 6:00 P.M.

LOCATION:  West Milford, New Jersey, Passaic County

TERRAIN: Green moss, many various sized rocks, hills, trees
 

OBSERVED:     I was at this particular site after reading about
probable B.F. encounters reported by employees of
N.J. Paintball Club. The employees never mentioned
B.F., but upon reading their accounts, (which I will
post after my story) I thought it to be a Sasquatch.

I have had an interest in B.F. since my Dad took me
to a stripmall at the age of 11 to see a Bigfoot movie.
I am now 33, and my interest has peaked. When I discovered
that there were B.F. sightings right in my own state
(in FOUR counties no less) I flipped! I decided to start
researching such areas, which brings me to my account.
I was accompanied by my girlfriend Tina, and a very
skeptical friend named Ralph. They both enjoy hiking,
so they came along. It took about an hour and a half
to reach the mountain. It is called Apshawa Mountain
(not sure, but 'Apshawa' sounds like it may mean 'ape'
or something to that effect in Native American) and it
is a highland area surrounded by Zeliff Pond, Shady
Lake, and Lake Van Nostrand. Apshawa Mountain was named by
the Leni Lenape Indians. The N.J. Paintball Club leases some
of the land, but on this wet late Sunday afternoon, our car
was the ONLY vehicle present in their parking area.

The club was closed. We entered the main trail
(the only way in or out of the woods from what we
could see) armed with just a disposable camera, bottled
water, and a plastic bag of apples (which I had brought as bait).
We had NO WEAPONS. As we hiked the trails, we noticed many rock cairns
(which the old locals claim to be Indian grave markers),
and also strange bundles of sticks which were tied
together and leaning against trees. I did not know it
then, but later found out that rock cairns are closely associated w/B.F.

Seems certain scientists believe that B.F. builds these
piles of stones to attract small chipmunk-like rock dwellers
(similar to Pikas, I guess) as a steady source of food.
B.F. returns to these rock piles and traps the denizens
within for dinner! VERY smart! The atmosphere was VERY creepy, as there was
a fog hanging in the air due to the on/off rainshowers.

We took some pictures by these HUGE 13 ft. Monolithic standing
stones, and walked on. Tina and Ralph wanted to stop and rest, so I obliged.
I then spotted a steep, high incline with a HUGE boulder sitting
square on top of it. I was very attracted to this area of higher
ground for some reason. How did that boulder get there?
was it just a natural occurence? I suppose so, but I wanted
to explore the area anyway, since B.F. is known to like
high ground. I asked Tina and Ralph to accompany me on my climb, but both
chickened out due to the slipperyness of the rocks/moss
and mud. Tina begged me to be careful as I began my ascent. It
was a bit tricky, as the ground was wet, and the incline was steep.
I proceeded slowly, and cautiously. Then IMMEDIATELY
upon arriving at the top, I was hit with a strong, skunk-like
oder! I made sure to scan the immediate area for skunk, which
there were none to be seen. I closed my eyes and cleared my mind
lest my imagination was playing tricks on me. I slowly opened my eyes,
and it seemed the smell was gone. I looked ahead at the vast
wooded area before me, and noted how dense the trees looked. At this point,
I heard Tina calling out to me from below, so I answered. She
said they wanted to get going, as we would soon be losing light. Then I
smelled it again - only STRONGER this time. Very skunky, yet different.
Almost B.O. like.

Skunk is the only other way I can describe it. Again I scanned for
skunk, but again, none were seen. At this point, my heart was
POUNDING, and you know how they say 'the hair was standing on
the back of my neck'? Well, it's true! I reached into my bag of Golden
Delicious apples, and raised one into the air. I held it for a moment,
and then placed it directly in the center of that huge boulder which
was to my right. I then took a photo of the boulder w/the apple
on it and the wooded area directly in front of me, then started my
descent.

I made it to the bottom without incident, and met up with Tina, and
Ralph. I said nothing of what I smelled for fear of ridicule, and we
just headed the way we came. As we walked, I heard leaves
crunching behind us. I ignored it at first, but when it persisted, I
stopped and turned. Nothing. I noted as I listened intently that
someones dog was barking off in the distance.

Ralph and Tina were ahead of me, so neither noticed me stop,
and I didn't want to tell them for fear of panicking them. I noticed
the sound two more times, the second was accompanied by a
loud branch popping sound. I stopped dead and turned to again
see nothing. This time however, Ralph noticed I had stopped. He
asked what was wrong, and I tried lying and said nothing, but
Ralph knows me too well. I told him I felt that someone was
'ghosting' us, but every time I turned, nothing was there. As we
walked on, Ralph also heard it. then, someone (or something)
whistled at us from that direction! Ralph's eyes widened and
Tina stopped. "Who is that"? she asked. I filled her in on the 'being
followed' thing, and Ralph claimed it was probably a land owner
with his dog chasing us out (he had also heard the dog barking).

I said that was B.S. since the whistling was close, and the barking
was still in the distance. Besides, if it WAS a land owner, why
wasn't he calling out to us? The whisle came again, and it was
definitely not a bird. The Whistles lasted about 3 to 5 seconds in
length, and did not waver or contain any vibrato. There was about
a minute to two minutes space between each whistle. The pitch was
kind of high.

Suddenly, two young deer bolted past us looking VERY frightened.
That didn't help make us feel any better! I realized that I had come
to this place in hopes of seeing a Sasquatch, but for some reason
at this point, I did not want to SEE ANYTHING! I just wanted to get
to the car! I was scared, and I admit it.

We felt followed all the way out of the woods, and only when we got
to the car did the feelings subside. Ours was STILL the only vehicle
in the area.I truly believe that even though I did not actually SEE
Bigfoot, that a Bigfoot was watching me on that incline, and saw me
leave it the apple as an offering, took the apple, and followed us out
while whistling at us. I have since corresponded with many folk and
heard many other 'whistling stories' which I never knew was a B.F. trademark.

I knew of the 'screaming' vocalizations, but had also never known of
the actual 'speaking' vocalizations that sound like backwards human speech.
I believe these beings are VERY intelligent, and DEFINITELY
not a stupid species of ape. They are closer to Humans for sure.

Activities of Witness:  Just walking and talking/joking around, taking photos.

Other Note:   Tina noticed when we were close to the end of the trail that a
A plastic area marker (similar to that yellow police tape) was shaking up
and down as if someone was holding it and shaking it. I told her it was
probably just the wind, but she quickly answered: "Bobby, there IS NO
WIND"! And she was right!
 
 

Any other occurences in this area:
Yes many. the reason I went there was to see the area
described in many accounts. The proprietor of N.J. Paintball was
stalked by a 'man-like shape' that jumped from tree to tree and
followed him only to dissappear. An employee was in the woods
when large rocks began wizzing by him. He initially thought it was
a fellow employee horsing around, but soon realized that the rocks
were too large and being flung too far and fast for it to have been
a human.

Another employee was being followed in the woods as he cleaned
up, and was so frightened by his expierience that he now refuses
to go into the area alone. The owner of the land had her Pastor
'Bless' the area to keep 'Evil Spirits' away. On nearby Clinton Road,
several expieriences also took place. A man had a 'huge man-like
creature' with red matted fur covering it's body walk just a few yards
in front of his car across the street and into the woods. The same
man's son had someone throwing rocks at him in the same area.

Two young men were riding their bikes down Clinton Rd. late one
moonless night, and saw something 'huge and hairy' in the woods
across from them, apparently following them. Both swear it was not
a bear, for both are well aware of what a bear looks like. The creature
exploded from the woods to give chase as they both heard the
"smack, smack, smacking"... of huge bare feet (TWO feet, not four)
on the blacktop!!! They peddaled FAST as the thing kept close, finally
giving up and running back into the woods.
