OBSERVED:
OK here goes, no one believes my story but its true. I was deer hunting
with 1 friend in the mountains of western NC. We were in, (with held)
which is covered in old growth forest very thick brush, Oak, Pine, laurel
thickets etc..We were in his P/U truck and parked at the end of an old
red clay logging road overlooking a large clear cut area. We had split
up about 3 in the afternoon at his pickup and went off in different directions.
It was a drizzly rainy day very overcast in late fall. I hiked several
miles from the truck, mostly scouting since this was new country to me.
I was armed with a 308 cal. rifle. I didn't see any game, but lots of deer
sign, and strangely no squirrels, birds or anything. It started to get
late and was getting on towards dusk. For some reason I remember I was
nervous in the woods, which was strange since I have spent most of my life
in the woods hunting or fishing. I walked through a semi open area where
there was an old homestead many many years ago, and felt the hair on the
back of my neck stand straight up. I just knew I was being watched but
I couldn't see anything or anyone around. I immediately started climbing
up the ridge away from the area headed back toward the truck. I started
hearing walking noises behind me in the brush, when I would stop it would
stop, when I would walk it would walk. I hollered several times for my
friend Greg but no response. This was really starting to creep me out.
I heard something which seemed to be pretty heavy and large following me,
breaking branches etc. all the way back. I got to the road and it was almost
dark and the fog had settled in, and the whole time I walked along the
road I could hear something walking in the laurel thickets that ran along
the side of the road on the upper side of the mountain. I stopped and yelled
who's there? Again nothing, I was almost at a run as I got back to the
truck. It was Greg's truck and it was locked so I couldn't get in. Again
I heard the walking and crunching of brush as something big moved the thickets
around me. I yelled again for greg. That's when a fairly good sized
rock came flying down and hit the road beside the truck and me, it was
larger than my fist. I could hear whatever it was moving away back into
the brush, but it didn't leave, it seemed to move in a semi circle around
the truck, down to the clear cut area, but not into the open and then back.
i yelled one more time who is out there and I have a gun. And I heard this
loud howling kind of noise, i had never heard a sound like this before
or since until I downloaded a bigfoot howl off of another site. This sound
literally scared me to death, I fired my rifle up into the air straight
up a couple of times then I decided screw this, and broke the vent window
on Greg's truck so I could get in. I sat in the truck for a long
time waiting on Greg to finally get back to the truck a couple of hours
after dark because he had gotten lost and turned around in the steep ridges
and ravines of the area. he knew I was upset and shaken, and when I told
him the story he related one his grandmother who had grown up in the area
back in the 20s and 30s about how the menfolk would escort the women and
kids back home through the woods at night, carrying rifles and lanterns,
after church because of a "monkey-man". I quit telling this story
because of of the ridicule from almost everyone except my friend Greg,
who is now deceased from brain cancer. I am a military vet. saw combat
with the 82nd Airborne and can truly say this was one of the strangest
and scariest things to ever happen to me.
Activities
of Witness: Hunting, walking
in woods.
Description
of Creature: Didn't ever see anything,
heard footfalls, sticks breaking etc, and one long loud scream/howl.
Other
Notes: Being armed with
a rifle in the middle of deer season I find it very hard to believe that
it was anyone hoaxing me. Also no one knew where we were and its a 30 minute
drive by 4 wheel drive to a paved road before you ever even get to a house.
Other
(Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:
Rumors of a "monkeyman" and "booger" in this area approx. 15 miles north
of Marshall, 10 miles south of Hot Springs NC in Madison Co. The Cherokees
had stories about an "old man of the woods" in this area also.
