OBSERVED: Charlie, (a fellow researcher), and I went to NE Mississippi to investigate two areas that have been hot spots and have had a lot of activity in recent weeks. We arrived at the first location around 7:30 pm CDT. We scouted the area for signs to the North and West of the central point. Because this area is swampy and difficult to negotiate, we settled for returning to the truck finding nothing that hasn't already been reported. We sat on the truck bed until about 9:00pm CDT and decided to check out the second spot after failing to observe or hear anything unusual.
We
went about 5 miles North arriving about 9:10pm CDT at our second location.
Shortly after exiting the truck, we heard an owl hoot to the SE about half
a mile away. Then something directly to the east on the otherside
of the area tried to answer or imitate the hoot owl but this didn't
sound like an owl. The weather was perfect with clear skies, a full moon
and completely still so we deciced to walk East towards this sound.
As we walked, we tried to imitate an owl 10 or 12 times and each time this
animal across from
the
way would answer from the same general location. A few times we heard
another
answer in the same manner from the SE but much farther away. There
were
some kids riding 4 wheelers to the South - SE so this could explain why.
We didn't have a chance to scout this area before dark so we had no idea
where we were headed other than to the end of the location. We could
see a tree line at the end by the moonlight and this animal was just beyond
the tree line. I estimated the distance across this area to be about 3/4
mile.
When
we were about 100 yards from the end, a very large tree fell and we heard
only what I can describe as grunting sounds coming right from where the
tree had just fallen. As I said earlier, there was absolutely no
wind what so ever. It was completely still. The tree that fell
was inside the tree line so we didn't see it fall but I feel like it was
within 150 yards and it was BIG! At this point it becomes painfully
clear to us that we are a long way from the truck and this thing doesn't
seem to be in a very good mood. Everything grew quiet and we stood
there for about 15 minutes trying to regain our composure and decide what
to do next. Finally, against our better judgement, we decided to
push on. We reached the end of the area and found a small dead animal
that appeared to be an armadillo although I wouldn't swear to it because
it was badly decomposed. I don't know if these are even common to
this area but that's what it looked like to me. At the end of the
area we came to a dirt road and on the other side of it is what appears
to be an intense swamp. We walked about 30 yards into the swamp choosing
our steps carefully and gave one more hoot call which was answered by a
growl about 50 yards to the North and East from within the swamp.
I believe now that the tree that I speculate was pushed over came from
that same vicinity from within the swamp. There was no way we were going
into the swamp, so as common sense
prevailed,
we headed back to the truck where we tried to sleep. We got back
to the truck about 11:00pm CDT so all of this occured over apprx. 2 Hours.
Occasionally
during the night we would hear a hoot coming from the swamp but it was
much deeper. The next morning we found the dirt road that runs behind the
area and we went back to the swamp to look for signs but it was much too
murky to travel through. However, while we were there, we inadvertently
met the owner of the property which is private property and is posted.
He told us we could come back just let him know. He also shared some
stories about hair raising screams that he and his family have heard through
the years coming from the swamps. You just never know what's around the
next bend.
