TIME:
9 pm
LOCATION:
Monroe County, Missouri
TERRAIN:
across the lake arm in heavy brush and high grass
OBSERVED:
About 9pm I was sitting on the rocky embankment of the bridge and fishing.
I was born an raised mostly in Monroe county. I have fished this area probably
a hundred times before. Other than an occasional car passing on the road
above and carp thrashing in the water below there were very few sounds.
Then as I sat there with my lantern behind me. I heard that call they make.
Its unmistakable and unsettling even though it was across the water some
two to three hundred yards away. I recognized the sound from my child hood
as I grew up on elk fork of salt river about 20 miles west of there. and
one lived there and frequented our camps as we night fished many times.
Only to check us out. never did it ever try to harm us. But that
sound and smell is undeniable. Oh that was back about 1966 until about
1970. there's a conservation area near there now called Cedar Bluff. My
brother and I hunted and fished probably a five mile area or more along
that river and the bottoms around it. in 1977 I returned to there after
telling someone about it and they laughed at me. we went down the river
in a canoe about two miles and camped on a sand bar where I knew the thing
had been heard before. That night about 11 pm we had got in our sleeping
bags and went to sleep and it let out its howl. by the time I got out of
my bag to get a flash light my fried was in the river with the canoe over
him pointing a 22 rifle out at the bank. I have found cedars snapped off
about 6-8 feet off the ground and the needles chewed off many places along
the river. This is deep thick woods and crop land area abundant with all
sorts of wild life. I have never seen any proof where it had eaten anything
but plants in that area how ever in the 60's there were a good population
of grey timber wolves in that area.
Additional
Info: When its near
nothing else makes a sound and the stench of it is horrible. All of these
early 60's sightings were before I had ever heard of a big foot. I knew
its curious and does not mean to harm any one. I believe it to still be
there on elk fork today but as for the incident over by the mark twain
lake I had never seen or heard it over there before. However as the lake
filled up in the 80's every one started to see animals that that never
had seen before. from mountain lions, bears, and black panthers. So it
does not surprise me to have heard it. Of course you ask the Mo. conservation
about bears or mountain lions or panthers in missouri and you get "OH THEY
DON'T EXIST" Trust me I was born and raised in those woods they are there!
Activities
of Witness: To many instances
to tell about. My brother and I pretty much lived with it as we ran the
woods night and day hunting and fishing. For about Five years we
lived on that farm we rented the house there. From night time hunting to
night time fishing to the several times it come near the house and barn.
We never feared it and it only followed and watched us. Some times
it had been so close to us at night we could hear it breathing but only
one time did it ever come into camp. and really scare us and that's because
we had a bag of marshmallows open in an old boy scout canvas back pack.
It came in as we were fishing grabbed the pack and ripped it open like
paper when we heard the ripping noise we turned and shined the light at
it its back was to us and as soon as it saw the light it ducked into the
woods only thing it took was the marshmallows. the hot dogs and the crackers
were left on the ground.
Description
of Creature: We only saw it three
times that I remember. Once it came into the yard for some reason. Our
Hunting dogs that ran loose and hunted everything form rabbit to wolves
were on the porch whining to get in the house that's what woke us up. When
dad went out side with a big spot light he said the thing stepped over
the fence (average woven wire fence about 4-5 foot tall and ran toward
a small pond bank near the woods. he said it was walking upright and covered
the football field distance in only a couple of minutes before the light
could not reach him any more. our porch had that smell for several days.
the time before it was going across a bean field at night away from the
barn the beans were over waste high that year and they were only just past
its knees. Its big heavy set and dark brown. I've never got a look at its
face. But I can tell you for something that large it moves with as little
sound as a deer would as it moves through the woods.
Other
Notes: Only one I can
think of was back in the 60's and some wolf hunters had some big mean dogs
and one night they hunted in the bottom the other side of the river from
the house and their dogs cornered something they said it scared them so
bad they left the dogs there where they found them and ran to the nearest
safe place which was our house. because what ever it was was between them
and the way out of that field along the river surrounded by bluffs and
only really on way in or out with out climbing. the next day we found their
big mean dogs ( some kind of hound/pincher mix one was wadded up like a
paper wad and the other was hanging over a limb in a near by tree. the
ribs had been crushed like something squeezed it like a sponge.
Other
(Informational or Encounter History in the General Area) Notes:
I'm not sure. I do know of an instance in Mexico Mo. but in that area I'm
not sure. Most people if they talked about any thing they would say they
saw that bear again.

Upon Contact the Witness Added:
One other thing I wanted to tell you in my original message I mentioned
back in the 60's there were big grey wolves in the salt river elk fork
area well monroe county in general. well when t was around even they stayed
clear. Im talking about wolves that stand waist high on a man on all fours.
these wolves weren't small but even in numbers they would haul ass when
it came around. I also want to add I was about 8 years old when we
moved there and I went in the woods all the time by by self and many many
times this thing would come around and I saw it as a guardian rather than
some thing to be feared. because I knew when It was there nothing else
that might hurt me wouldn't. Like I said when he's near you know it because
its totally quiet. Smelly if he's close but quiet. this think make a skunk
smell like potpourri. A
