DATE:    9/21/02

TIME:     Just after sunrise

LOCATION:   Minnesota, Houston County

TERRAIN:    Bluffs with 300 + foot hills and heavily wooded

OBSERVED:    Me and my dad have several farms we go hunting on...this one happens to be on the bare side of a bluff. About halfway up is the grazing area for the cows and it starts to get thick again once it gets fenced off. Me and my dad decided to get some squirrel hunting in after a nice cold night...we got there at sunrise and did our usual thing...loaded guns...walked about 100 ft. into the forest and started our usual trend of listening for animals running along the dry leaves.

We were starting to near the top of the bluffs when we found a good clearing that we can just sit and look down the side of the bluff watching for movement. Its about that time when we stated to hear..a snorting like noise coming from behind us. The sound was hard to describe...it sounded...for lack of a better description...like someone really large hacking something up. We looked behind us not seeing anything because we were just getting into the really thick area. This went on for a few minutes and it didn't move...so it appeared to be directed at us. My dad getting a little annoyed fired a shot into the air to scare whatever it was away...and it seemed to work because the sounds stopped. once again we started walking higher onto the bluff because the top seems to have the most animal life. We were walking along a trail next to a fence when we heard what seemed to be 4-5 deer running full sprint down the trail...a couple seconds later they appeared directly in front of us and missed us by only a few feet...they didn't even bother to avoid us. My dad, being a veteran to hunting and the area told me to load my 12 gauge in case there was a bear looming ahead on the trail. We kept walking until we got to the top of the bluff, and found nothing.

Going on with our normal plans we shot a few squirrel and even got a grouse on our trek along the top. We were thinking about turning back because we knew we were reaching the line between our land and private property. We came to our usual resting site which is a collection of logs that have been piled up from storms over the past couple years. We were about to round the corner to sit down when we must have startled something also sitting on the other side. All I heard was something huge take off downhill into the pine's...in just a few seconds it managed to snap 3-5 inch branches that were I guess in its way. it moved fast and by the time me and my dad had our large guns reloaded it was completely gone...I heard no usual bounding like a deer would...just a heavy run. the initial tree branches it took out ranged from about 1-5 feet in the air. My dad didn't have any answers for me...he guessed a cow or something, only we were in the fenced off area. We left a few minutes after that....12 gauges loaded all the way down.

Activities of Witness:   Hunting...about to sit down and rest

Description of Creature:  N/A

Other Notes:    Nothing too unusual...a few dead cow bones lying here and there. But that could be waved off as coyotes and whatnot. I also turned in a sighting a few years back for the Eau Claire incident, so I have had my past experiences.

Additional Notes or Comments N/A
