OBSERVED:
While grouse hunting this fall I had an unusual experience in Michigan.
About an hour before dark, after leaving a clear-cut, I entered into a
mature stand of Aspens with heavy undergrowth at the edges. It was
also a little swampy with some standing water here and there.
Within
thirty yards of entering the stand my English Setter "Red" went on point.
I managed to harvest one of the three grouse that flushed. Since
I only had an hour left to hunt I decided to make a big loop and come back
to that spot right before dark to try to pick up another single.
Upon returning to that spot, "Red" became very skittish and would no longer
quarter in front of me. Finally he just stopped moving altogether.
He just stood, frozen, stairing at the dark patch of swampy woods in front
of us. He waited until I came up along side him and passed him before
he even acknowledged my presence.
Suddenly
I noticed a strange smell. I know that I hadn't smelled it upon entering
that area the first time. Nor had I ever smelled anything like it
while hunting in Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Kentucky, etc. I didn't
know what it was but Red was on full alert and the further we went the
stronger the smell became.
By
now it was almost dark and we still had a couple miles walk through the
woods to the truck with no trails or old logging roads to follow.
I decided to stop, look, and listen for what we were smelling. After
that moment of dead silence we began moving again and all heck broke loose
not more than twenty-five yards ahead of us. All I heard was large
limbs cracking, water splashing, and heavy thuds of something getting out
of there in a hurry. To this day I don't know what it was but I will
never forget that smell. If anyone in your organization has ever
smelled a bigfoot please e-mail me with a description of their encounter
and the smell.
