TIME: Early afternoon
LOCATION:Maine, Penobscot County
East
of Bangor and the Penobscot River, in heavily wooded wilderness of rolling
hills.
TERRAIN:Wooded low mountains with rocky ravines, outcrops
OBSERVED:My friend and I hiked several miles up a small
mountain. It was a chilly day, overcast and misty but not rainy. We reached
the top of the "hill" which had a bald clearing-rock surrounded by trees
with a good view of the neighboring hills. As we approached the summit we
both smelled a strong animal smell. The closer we got to the top, the stronger
it got. We approached the summit cautiously, both sampling the smell and
trying to figure out what it was. We are both very experienced wildnerness
hikers and have hunted...we knew it wasn't bear or cat, or even fox, having
smelled them before. The crest of this mountain had a sheer dropoff on one
side, and would have been a difficult, but do-able, scramble down. This is
where the smell was coming from, really wafting up. We both decided discretion
was the better part of valor and quietly walked down about 100 yards or so
back the way we had come, not wanting to disturb the animal, whatever it
was...we took our lunch out and sat attentively on the bare rock, watching
for any possible uninvited lunch guest, and decided beforehand that in that
event, we would politely leave our food and run! We did not see anything,
but the whole time had a creepy sensation we were being watched. We hiked
back out with no unusual encounters.
