REPORT RECEIVED: From the GCBRO field report notes of Mike Brotherton.  "THE BIG HUNT"

DATE:  01/16/00

LOCATION:  NW Louisiana, Location withheld due to ongoing investigations by the GCBRO

TERRAIN:   Wooded, with Creek Bottoms .

OBSERVED:  One of several field reports from "THE BIG HUNT" hosted for GCBRO members beginning the week of January 15, 2000, and lasting until January 25,2000.

I attended the hunt two long weekends, Jan. 14-17, 2000 and Jan. 21-24. The first Friday evening people were still arriving and we did not go into the area where the animals were being fed.  We did not sit outside and listen
or do much else that first night, so nothing to report.

The next day when most of the group had arrived, we went down into the bottoms to set up camp, put out food, and see the sign.  And there was sign.  Just inside a thick patch of woods between a small creek and a clear-cut is where feed corn, 30-40 lbs, has been put out regularly.
There was scat in and around the remains of the corn there -- I have some photos and I'm sure others do as well.  Back along the creek from there are numerous "tree markers" where limbs have been placed, stacked, twisted, etc., for no apparent reason.  Pictures of these are already up on the GCBRO web site.  We found one crummy footprint back along here, photographed but certainly not worth casting, and another suspicious scuff mark on the creek bed.  I think it was near here that the knuckle print was found and cast the next day, but I did not personally see that.

While the group of us was trekking along the creek following a big game trail looking at all the tree stuff, the shooters were setting up in a blind looking toward the food plot and a likely creek crossing point (a few large logs traverse the creek, which is about 6 foot down, in places).
We came out and went and made camp in a field about a half mile away.

At camp we tested (played with) our equipment, comparing night vision scopes, camcorders, weapons, and the like.  As night fell, we did start to hear some strange stuff.  There was a funny bird call, maybe an owl, that was sort of a trill -- I think someone taped it.  Anyway, these calls would go out and be answered, and the pair of calls would move around quite a lot.  We also heard some howls that would set-off other animals: cows, coyotes, and
dogs.  The starting howl did not sound like any of these other animals.
We did not have anything approach the camp as far as we knew.  Around midnight the shooters came in with their story (I taped the debriefing), and most went to sleep.  I stayed up until dawn and heard few unidentifiable calls the last part of the night.

The next night (Sunday) shooters went out in stands, and the rest of us stayed up at the shop where we had slept Friday night.  We sat outside and listened and heard more calls.  More of the trilling/chortalling owl call, and more of the howls that started other animals up.  When the shooters came in, a couple claimed to have heard a large animal on two legs moving through the forest.

I returned the following Friday evening and found the camp at a bed in the road between the shop and the field where we had camped the previous Saturday night.  Although it was early, one shooter had already come
back in after he'd heard something behind him and something had shaken the tripod stand he had been sitting in.  I sat up all night listening and heard some distant calls.  Some of us also walked around quietly
without flashlights (the moon was bright) and listened for things.  I also looked for signals with my gamefinder (a mid-infrared heat source detector), but it is a difficult instrument to use and yields a lot of false signals.

The next night I sat out in the same tripod stand that had got the "shake" the night before.  This stand is on the edge of the field where we had first camped.  Bobby warned me that the most dangerous thing out there was
my imagination, and that is certainly true!  Just before full dark I heard something moving in the pine thicket across the road from me.  It was either a smaller animal or a large animal trying to be quiet.  When it got close
the noises stopped, and in the next few minutes I saw two single flashes of red about 7 ft off the ground.  I'm not saying this was the reflection of the last bit of sunset in the eyes of a bigfoot, but I was sure thinking it on the stand.  I had that area partially obscured by a branch and I did not have my night vision scope in my hand.  By the time I had leaned back and gotten to my night scope, moving VERY slowly, whatever it was had started moving up the road along the inside of the thicket toward the camp where Bobby was.  I should have not worried about moving slowly, as anything across the road would have made me pretty easily against the light of the sky (the trees are very thin where this tripod sits).  Well, next time.  A little while later I heard the "owl call" behind me, pretty loud, and from up the road toward camp I heard another answer.  The calls continued a few per minute as the pair worked their way toward the camp.

Not too long later I saw some light from the bottom.  A man with a flashlight who came up the road, up the field, and right along the road to camp by me.  It was a local man who was helping us out as a shooter placed in the
bottoms that night.  I figured I'd been made anyway and came on down and the two of us walked in to camp.  He had been hunting those bottoms in the area most of his life but he'd "never heard no animal like dat!"  And
made sort of a clucking or clicking sound, pretty loud, that he said he'd heard on both sides of him in the bottom near the food plot.  Later, he and I and Bobby walked some of the roads in the dark, quietly.  We heard
various scratchings around in the dark, most likely armadillos.  We did hear a raccoon squawk angrily several times, getting cut off rather abruptly.  The other shooters came in around midnight, maybe a little later, and
had stories to tell about after the first shooter had walked out.

We camped that night a couple of miles away in a clear cut off a road.  It was that next morning I had a daytime sighting.  A couple of us had gone off for coffee, and a couple of us (including me) were getting ready
to head back over and take down a tree stand and look for a missing 2 way radio.  I was waiting and just looking back toward the end of the clear-cut.
The distance was about 300 yards, perhaps a little less.  There were some crows flying around back that way.  Right at ground level I saw something at the tree line move from right to left between two bushes and in front
of a tree.  It was black, fast moving, and appeared about man-sized.  The dark shape was definitely taller than it was wide.  I had my glasses on but at that distance could not make out any detail.  If it was a crow, it had to have been flying at ground level, sideways, with its wings all the way out, and not been visible taking off or landing except for that narrow bit between the brush.  I don't think it likely it was a crow, and I did not think that for an instance when it had appeared.  We walked back there and found tree markers again (I have photos), and some old weathered foot prints.

We camped back in the field Sunday night, with two shooters in the bottom by the food plot and another in a stand between the field and the bottoms.  It was a pretty quiet night, and dark with no moon early.
We again heard the owl call, but not very close, and some funny howls, again not very close.  The shooters came in with little to report and we called it a night before 1AM.  I got up at 5AM and left to catch my plane out of Dallas.
