REPORT RECEIVED: From the GCBRO field report notes of Dan Ricke.  "THE BIG HUNT"

DATE:  01/16/00

LOCATION:  NW Louisiana, Location withheld due to ongoing investigations by the GCBRO

TERRAIN:   Wooded, with Creek Bottoms .

OBSERVED:  One of several field reports from "THE BIG HUNT" hosted for GCBRO members beginning the week of January 15, 2000, and lasting until January 25,2000.

Day, 1  Arrived saturday morning meeting everybody for the first time, the day was busy getting ready for the nights hunt. Bushman and I were to hunt together the first night in the bottoms where Monster Hunter had been feeding corn on a regular basis for several months.  At about 5:30 we were in place in our sniper hide, Bushman and I  had discussed a plan of action in case of actually downing one of these animals and felt ready for the nights hunt. We were in place at about 5:30, we lay in place for a several hours with swarms of mosquitoes fighting for a place to land on any exposed skin, at about 9:00 pm we had to stretch some very cramped  muscle and move some leaves which were making a racket at the slightest move, as we settled back down in our hide, I heard some branches or limbs breaking in the direction I was facing at that time I also heard a strange mewling sound much like two limbs rubbing together.

I continued scanning the area were the sounds came from with night vision scope on rifle. Also I remember a sound coming from my rear which was where Bushman was facing, which was muffled by the hood on my camo suit, this was about 10:30pm, by this time muscles were getting strained again and I attempted to slowly move to relive the strain in my neck and back and I may have given away our position by doing this. We called in at 12:30 for extraction

Day 2, That night I did not go out to hunt as it being Sunday and still sore from the previous nights hunt I stayed in camp with Bobby and Monster Hunter, it was still quite a evening as you could hear vocalizations in the woods around us. Bobby and Bushman tried to record a very interesting sound that almost sounded like a bird. I also listened to it with a bionic ear it was a warbling sound that that I never heard before.

Day 3, This night I hunted in a box stand on the ground next to a dense stand of pine, overlooking a intersection of two roads, as sun down approached I heard several vocalizations in different directions from me, as the evening wore on I heard sounds of movement behind me in the pine thicket the sound came very close to the rear of the stand and I kept a cautious hear to my rear. Also I again heard the strange bird like sound coming towards me it kept getting closer and when it got about a 150 yds from me it abruptly ended with a, "ah-oooooo" at the end.

Day 4, The hunt began with me in a tripod deer stand which was placed in a tree row about 50 yds. in front of the box stand where I was  the previous night. At about 8:30 I heard heavy bipedal foot steps coming from my left, towards my stand, they were just inside the pine thicket it also sounded like there was several animals in this group the footsteps moved off to my right I could hear the cracking of leaves in the area for about 10 or 15 minutes, just when the sounds of brush and leaves ended I was unnerved by something coming rapidly  towards my stand what ever it was went right under where I was sitting I could not get a visual on whatever it was because of the limbs in the tree row obscured the area on both sides of me. Then at about 9: 45 I again heard very heavy bipedal steps this time moving very quickly straight towards my stand from my right generally in the direction of where the other steps had gone earlier, this time it was crushing limbs and leaves each time it stepped I could clearly hear each step as it moved towards me I got in a position to greet the owner of these footsteps as I was sure it would step out in front of my stand just at the last minute it turned and retraced the steps I heard earlier that evening going back to my left. Later that evening Monster Hunter and Bushman
and I walked back from camp to the area and Monster Hunter found in the pine thicket a well traveled trail several feet wide that matched the movements I heard earlier that night.

Day 5, I did not hunt that night but stayed in camp with Monster Hunter and Bobby, Monster Hunter took me on a very interesting walk through some older growth forest that night with trees as tall a 150 tall, we were hoping that we could get a Monster to trail us and maybe get a shot.

Day 6, This night I again was in the box stand, I dropped off about 5:30 pm and was just getting settled in when across the road in the pine thicket where I had heard the footsteps on day 4, I heard a loud short growl as if someone was very unhappy about me being in his area. While I was watching that area very closely which was to my left I was startled by a loud sharp rap on the right side of the box stand I still don't know if something was thrown or the animal actually came up and hit the the box with its hand needless to say it was a heart stopping moment, at the time it confirmed my fears of the one that had been moving around behind me ( as close as 15 or 20 ft.) of grabbing me through the burlap door we had stapled up, it being the coldest night of the hunt I
bugged out at about 9:30 that night.

Day 7, Friday night I stayed in camp to assist Monster Hunter if a shot rang out as Bobby had left to go home for a day, and Saturday morning I returned home. I learned a tremendous amount on this hunt in these animals behavior, in what they eat, in the different sounds they make, and a little in their social structure this hunt was not a failure by any means but a very good learning experience, also carrying a gun does not make a difference in  encounters you have with them, in most cases a shot could have been taken, but we don't make brush shots at some thing just inside the tree line. Also I did not ever experience any battery draining on any of the electronic
equipment I was using or get any headaches.
