LOCATION:
Kentucky, McCreary County
TERRAIN:
Wooded
OBSERVED:
This happened in the late 80's the first part was what happened to my brother
and cousin and the next was what I heard and the last was what was witnessed
by me and my family one evening. To start my brother and cousin decided
to camp out in our field on night it was early summer and the weather was
just right for that. Sometime during the night my brother heard something
sniffing around the tent and he thought that it was our mule so he smacked
at the tent and told her to go away and he didn't think much else about
it until about a half an hour later or so when he heard the sniffing noise
again and then across the field he heard the mule braying and carrying
on like crazy at about the same time that the sniffing started up around
the tent again. Well he woke up my cousin and they waited until they
heard the animal go away and the mule come closer to where they were at
and they lit out back to the house which was about 100 or so yards away.
Well about 2 days after this happened I was awakened one morning by some
kind of animal screaming (that is the best that I can describe it) at the
back of the field near the woods. It was a very lonely sound and
very haunting. I believe it may have been that night or maybe a few
nights later that my family and I were sitting outside on the porch and
it was just starting to get dark when our dogs started barking like crazy
up the hill toward the road, well we all looked to see what they were barking
at when we saw something leave the woods and start down the bank toward
the road. When it started across the road it lowered down a bit so
that it was sort of slinking across the road like it was trying to make
itself less noticeable. It was solid black and was definitely not
a dog. We all believe that it was a black cougar/panther/ mountain
lion or what ever you want to call it. It was young because it was
not much bigger than a medium sized dog we came to the conclusion that
it must have lost it's mother. At the time that this sighting happened
there had been a lot of road construction going on and stuff because they
were making that area near my dads' property a national park.
Activities of Witness:
First two witnesses were camping it was night time they did not see anything
but something was outside their tent and it was not our mule. I was
sleeping and was awakened by the animal making noises I have never heard
any thing like it before or since. And when we saw the animal cross
the road we were sitting on our front porch.
Description of Creature:
It was solid black about the size of a medium dog and when we watched it
cross the road it lowered it body close to the ground and was slinking
across the road like a house cat will do when they do not want to draw
attention to themselves. When I heard it it made a kind of screaming
cry that was very lonely sounding.
Other Notes: Sometime later neighbors around the road said they saw the same thing one night crossing the road or a near by field i can't remember which and I believe they said they also heard it.
Well this may not be part of this,
but sometime before this we had our mule fenced in a smaller area down
away from the house while we were fencing in the main field for her and
one night we heard her outside and we thought that she had broken the fence
and gotten out but when we went to check the fence was still intact and
she never did try to jump the fence again once we put her in the main field.
Needless to say we did not put her back in the other area since we had
no idea what had scared her so badly.
Additional Notes and or Follow up Comments: Upon contact the witness had no additional information to add to this report.
