TIME:         Around 9:30 p.m.

LOCATION:  Waterloo, Iowa. Blackhawk County

TERRAIN:    Wooded,  wooded both sides of creek, and also corn fields.

OBSERVED:   I and a few other of my friends were camping by Blackhawk Creek before I was going into the U.S. Navy.  I was 18 at the time when this incident occured.  I was sitting by the campfire alone while my friends all went into town.  While I sitting there, I all of a sudden smelled a really strong odor coming from across the creek.  I first started smelling this oder when it was about a mile away, and it then became stronger.  Not knowing what the smell was, I started to hear loud crunching on the other side of the creek coming closer to where I was.  I knew it was not a deer, because the crunching was much too loud to be a deer.  I was starting to get scared, and hoping my friends would get back soon!  The smell was so bad, it smelled like something had died.  The smell was musky.

Thinking back a few years before this (1973), when I went to see the movie, "The Legend of Boggy Creek", I wondered if this could be a Sasquatch?  So at this point, I was terribly afraid.  I was watching the other side of the creek to see if I could see anything along the shoreline.  I could hear the noise getting louder as it entered the tree line by the sandbar.  I could not see too well, because of the darkness, but I did see a big, dark shadow on the sandbar from the moonlight.  I was so scared I didn't want to make any kind of noise, because I didn't want whatever it was on the other side to swim on the side I was on.  The creek was about 10 feet deep.  The thing never came out of the tree line, so I was thinking maybe it was someone, so I hollered out, "Hey, who's over there?" quite loud.  The thing quit moving, and it then got quiet.  I didn't move while sitting at the fire, and I was also staring over into the tree line where I heard the noise.

This part is going to sound stupid, but it seemed like "it" put me in some kind of a transe before it left.  I could hear it as it left for about a 1/4 of a mile away.  I could also hear loud splashing noises in the creek (it wasn't any beaver).  It left going south (towards Hudson, IA).  When my friends finally returned (2 hours later), I did not say anything to them, because they would have thought I was crazy.  I didn't even think about looking for tracks, or anything else, because it really shook me up.  I am pretty sure that this was an encounter with Sasquatch.  This has been over 20 years and I have not told anyone about this incident until a few years ago to my girlfriend (I now live in WI w/her).  This place is now a nature trail running along Blackhawk Creek.
