DATE:
August 1989-91
TIME:
Dusk
LOCATION:
Illinois, Pope County
TERRAIN:
Wooded
OBSERVED:
While squirrel hunting, just before dusk my "ex-wife" was walking through
a thicket in a wooded ravine when she started smelling a very strong odor
similar to a "billy goat". The air and the woods were very still. When
she stopped to figure out which way would be the best to navigate through
the thicket she heard a couple of foot steps following behind her. Because
the area was so dense and the darkness of dusk, it was impossible to see
what was following her. She immediately started walking faster and could
hear the foot steps still following. Each time she would stop to look back,
the foot steps would also stop. The odor in the area was very strong at
this time. Finally she reached the top of the ravine and the edge of the
woods. She fired a shot into the tree tops in the direction of her follower
and heard "something" or "someone" or "whatever" run off down the ravine
through the woods. The odor that was so strong began to fade away at this
point. When she got home and told me about the incident, I started kidding
her about a "Big Foot" was trying to catch her. She said that wasn't funny!
The next day shortly after noon I went to sit on our back deck, which was
surrounded by woods, and as I opened the door to go out there was a very
strong "billy goat" odor in the air. I immediately thought about the incident
the evening before and started scanning the woods searching for the source
of the odor. I never saw anything out of the ordinary so I went back in
and phoned our neighbor who owned a billy goat but he assured me that his
billy goat had never been loose nor had it left his farm. I returned to
the back deck again to investigate further but the odor was gone and never
returned again. Could this have been a "Big Foot"?
I don't know of any other encounters
in this area and the actual source of the foot steps and odor were never
seen, or was this some sort of coincidence and imagination that sparked
the theory of Big Foot?
I wish I knew for sure.
Activities of Witness:
Squirrel hunting while sitting on deck surrounded by woods.
Description of Creature:
No creature was sighted, only the sound of foot steps in the thicket and
the very strong odor similar to a billy goat smell.
Other Notes:
N/A
Additional Notes or Comments:
Additional information added by
the witness from the follow up.
The smell of a "billy goat" was
so strong that it made her eyes water and her nose burn. The next day the
same strong smell was behind our house for just a short while but nothing
was seen or heard. The only billy goat in the area was at least 1 mile
away from either site and when the owner was asked if the billy goat was
free to roam, he said his goat is never turned loose and was there at his
farm at the times questioned.
Have you had any reports of a Big Foot having the smell of a "billy goat"?
