OBSERVED:
Okay here's the story. In 1974 I was 19 years old and living in XXXXXXX,
just outside of XXXXXXXXXX FL. My friend XXX and I spent alot of
time riding dirt bikes during the day, and at night we would be out cruising
and seeing what kind of trouble we could get into. Of course this was the
70's, it was Florida, and and we were two longhaired kids with too much
free time-and smoking pot was one way to kill some time. We knew the local
woods pretty well from our dirt bike activities, and we had discovered
an isolated place that was a perfect place to stop at night to smoke a
bone and shoot the bull, which we often did if we couldn't find anything
else to do-which was quite often. This place was located on the east side
of XXXXXXX, which back then was on the edge of
wilderness. To get there, we would
drive east on XXXXXX Ave past the old XXXX High School, and continue east
for about a quarter
mile or so, where there was a tiny
subdivision. Here the road split in two, and like an inverted horse shoe,
both roads dead ended on another small road that headed north. Maybe a
hundred yards or so this paved road turned into a Gravel/dirt road. It
was heavily
wooded on both sides, to the east
there was also some kind of ranch/farm, I don't recall what they
raised or grew there. About 3/4 of a mile or so north on this road, there
was a small dirt path that led into the woods on the left side (west).
This road was basically two ruts and was just wide enough for a vehicle
to traverse. About 200 feet into the woods there was a small clearing,
just big enough to back into and turn around. From the beer cans hanging
on the tree branches it was obvious that other folks were aware of this
spot also. My 71 Fiat just barely had enough room to back into that spot,
we could reach out either window and touch the tree branches. Facing
the south we could see the top
of a radio tower with its eerie flashing red light.
We would typically hit this spot
around 10 pm as I recall it was almost always around the same time. Of
course the first thing we would do is fire up a joint, and kick back and
talk about whatever. Now here's where things start to get a little interesting.
At first we would here dogs barking in the distance-at the time I remember
thinking that they were on that farm, but I suppose they may have belonged
to
someone in that subdivision.
Usually within 10 minutes or so
there would be another sound- a distant screaming, a throaty screaming
that would get steadily closer! At some point, when the sound was fairly
close (I'm guessing here-maybe a quarter mile or so), it would stop.
By this time, we would be properly medicated and would go on our way. Know,
I know what you're thinking- weren't we curious about what was making that
noise. Stories of Yetis in Florida were not exactly mainstream at the time,
but there was some buzz on the subject-and XXXX and I had heard some of
the stories. We often joked that the sound we heard must be the yeti, but
I guess trying to find some "chicks" or a good party was just more important.
Then there was the one night when
we had an "encounter"
On this particular night we had
picked up our friend XXXX, who lived not far from us in XXXXXXX. We ended
up parking at our
favorite spot in the woods and
as usual, lit up a joint. Soon we heard the familiar sounds of the dogs
barking, followed by the strange screaming sound! XXXX was sitting
between XXXX and I, and we were teasing her that the sound was a yeti.
As I recall XXXX had already heard of the yeti. Once again the sound stopped,
but this time we decided to hang around and see what would happen. It was
a hot summer night and both our windows were rolled down, I had my arm
resting on the door, I could reach out and easily reach the surrounding
leaves and branches. It was about 15 minutes or so after the screaming
sound had stopped, none of us were speaking, when I heard the SOUND. I
can only describe as this-inhale as very slowly and as deep as you can,
than exhale the same way. Now magnify that by about 5 or 10. The sound
came from the woods on my side of the car, and it was VERY CLOSE! It seemed
to be just a few feet away, but certainly no more than 25 feet. I
turned towards XXXX and XXXX, and in the dim light I could plainly see
their expressions, and ESPECIALLY their eyes-and it was a look of terror!
I fumbled for the ignition and and jammed the Fiat into first gear, all
the while trying to roll up my window. Jeff Gordon would be impressed on
how fast that little Fiat navigated that dirt path-we hit the gravel road
with the wheels spinning and didn't
look back!
Needless to say that we never went
back to that place at night ever again!
Activities of Witness:
Sitting in vehicle in secluded location.
Description of Creature:
It was about a few weeks later that I saw the article in the St Petersburg
Times Pasco County section. A story on yetis in Pasco County-but it gets
better! The article describes how several people in a small subdivision
in XXXXXXXXX-the SAME subdivision in the my story-claimed, no, swore that
they had heard, and SEEN a yeti(s) in the woods surrounding their homes.
One family said that they saw a yeti at night in their backyard!
Okay, now this is where my naturally
skeptical side comes into play. Was that a yeti that we heard? I
really can't say, I really find it hard to believe that such a creature
could exist-BUT, I really can't explain what it is that we heard on that
dark not so long age. Oh, and as far as being stoned goes-we weren't exactly
newbies at the art of getting stoned; we were pretty damn good at it and
we definitely were not having auditory Hallucinations-I know what I heard,
and so did XXX and XXX!
