REPORT RECEIVED From: The GCBRO Online Report Submission Form.
DATE:
08/1995
TIME:
Between 9:30-11:30pm
LOCATION:
Litchfield County, Connecticut
TERRAIN:
Wooded
OBSERVED: There is a small pond located in XXXXX XXXXX area. I have frequently visited this place throughout my life to fish, camp, hike, bike, and hunt. The pond is spring fed, and is located in a flood control area. A town built dam at one end helps maintain the water level, but at the time of the incident the dam was poorly built. In late summer the water level in the pond would drop drastically, and create a higher concentration of fish. The best time to go fishing was at night when temps were cooler.
On this one particular night I decided to go moonlight bass fishing alone. I parked my car at the entrance gate around 9:00pm, and proceeded on foot down the service road. The moonlight was intense, and afforded me the luxury of saving my flashlight batteries for most of the trek. The trip from the road to the pond is approx. 3/4 of a mile, and takes you through several fields which are cut in the summer. I walked through the final field, and over a stone wall, onto a path that leads directly to the spot on the pond where I wanted to fish. The area from the stone wall to the pond is wooded, and required use of the flashlight.
The end of the path emerges from the wood line in an area of land that juts out into the pond, forming a point. Due to the low water level, it was another 50 yards walk to get to the waters edge. When I reached the water I decided to go out even further and fish off of a couple of rocks offshore.
I had been fishing for approximately an hour, and enjoyed moderate success. The moon was full, and almost directly overhead. I was out in the wide open, and could see very well all around the shoreline. The wood line around the pond was spaced from the water at least 30 yards plus in all directions. The moonlight did not penetrate into the woods, and so I could not see into them. I felt as though I were on center stage to anything that might be in the woods observing me.
All of a sudden out of nowhere a loud and deep sound emanated from just inside the wood line directly behind me. This was the same location at the end of the path I had used to enter the area. My knees went weak, and I nearly fell off the rocks. I turned to face the area in a ducking position trying to see what it was. The sound was again repeated after a short pause, and then nothing. I pointed my flashlight in the direction of the sound hoping to catch a glimpse of something, maybe see some eye shine. My flashlight however was too weak, the moon too bright, and the distance too far. Those two sounds were all that I heard that night, and then silence.
The sounds were as follows: WWRRUUMMMPFSFSFSSS!!-twice in succession, then a short pause (10 sec.) followed by the same WWRRUUMMMPFSFSFSSS!! Twice in succession.
The sounds were deep, and loud. They had to have come from something quite large in size, (200+lbs.) They echoed across the pond! They were definitely directed at me, something was letting me know it was there. I am quite familiar with most animals in this area, and this reminded me of none.
Whatever it was seemed to have positioned itself at a clever vantage point. I found it odd that prior to and after, there were no sounds of walking in the woods. Whatever this was made a stealthy approach and exit, especially for an animal of this perceived size.
I stayed and fished nervously for
another hour, knowing that I would have to return the way I came. I departed
cautiously using my flashlight all the way, and made it back to my car
without further incident.
Activities of Witness:
Top water fishing in moonlight.
Description of Creature:
Just the sounds/vocalizations
Other Notes:
Just the fact that there was no approaching, or retreating sounds. Very
stealthy.
Additional Notes or Comments: Upon contacting the witness this is some additional information the witness wished to add to their report.
"A few more things to add"
At the time this event occurred, I did not have internet access, My initial
reasoning was that this creature was a rogue moose that occasionally enter
the state of connecticut.
A few years later I was privileged
with internet access. After some initial bumbling around, I decided to
look-up an old favorite subject of mine...Bigfoot. I was amazed at the
wealth of info, and surprised to find that sasquatch sightings were not
indigenous to the pacific northwest. Suddenly my encounter at the pond
sparked new light. I mentally re-assessed the occurrence several times,
and the biggest question in my head was "how could something of such perceived
size be so quiet in its approach. Surely a
moose would have been heard during
its approach and exit. Why did it position itself in such a strategic manner,
and ounce it was positioned why did it deliberately convey its presence
in such a regimented manner? and again, why the stealthy retreat?
when I finally got the courage to leave the area, I walked directly through
the path that these sounds came from. For all I know, Whatever it was could
have still been there hiding among the trees. There were no smells, sounds
or signs of any kind that anything was there.
