TIME:       About 11:30 P.M.
 

LOCATION:     About 20 miles outside of Redding California.  State Campground near Goat Creek at Shasta Lake.
 

TERRAIN:      National Forest
 

OBSERVED:      I was fourteen years old at the time but can still remember the events as if it had happened yesterday.  It was what I believe to be my first experience with a bigfoot creature.  Every summer my family would pile into the Winnebago camper for our annual trip up North to Vancouver British Columbia.  My father would take three weeks vacation and we would drive North to Canada and back often stopping at numerous campgrounds along the way.

One of our favorite stops was Shasta Lake near Redding California.  We loved staying at or around the lake because of the immense size of the lake and the numerous campgrounds located around it's vast and immense shoreline.  The deep and dark forest surrounding the hills and mountains around the lake were some of the thickest in the Pacific Northwest.

This particular year my father decided to stay at a small RV accessible campground located about two miles from the lake.  A good size creek named "Goat Creek" was located about 75 yards from the main section of the campground.  Since it was summer the campground was almost full with tenters, RV's and campers.  If I recall there were about twenty campsites and about 15 of them were occupied.  We had been there for about two nights enjoying the numerous hiking trails and the nearby lake shore.  At night people would stack wood and light up their fire rings.  They would sit around talk, laugh and play music until the late hours of the night.  Since each campsite was only 15 feet from the other it was easy to hear and see what all the neighbors were doing and saying.

As I said previously the campground was what I considered to be fairly small.  We had been at the lake almost all day and were pretty exhausted by the time the sun was setting.  My mother made a quick supper of hot dogs and chips and we turned in early for the night.  My brother and I shared the top bunkbed while my other brother slept in another sleeping area near the RV door.  My parents were in a back sleeping area at the rear of the Winnebago.  I fell asleep listening to the chatter of the other campers around their fire rings.

At about 11:30 p.m. I awoke to a loud slow moaning howl that sounded close at first and then faded down to a growl or grunt.  I remember hearing somebody in a campsite close by say "What the %#*&! was that!" another person responded "Listen, there it goes again!"  Again the erie moan or howl began.

"WHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOWAAAAAAAAAGRUNT!"

Since I was now fully awake the howling sounded a lot closer now.  I heard a woman outside ask somebody, "Oh my God is that a wolf?"  Somebody else responded, "It sounds too big to be a wolf and there are no wolves in this part of the country."  Again the erie howling began "WHHHOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAWGRUNT!"  By now the whole campground was awake and people were standing out in front of there tents and campers listening to that godawful noise.  The shear force of the bellowing scream would give you goosebumbs and raise the hair on your neck.  My brother and I  were trying to peek out of the small camper windows to see if we could see what it was.

About this time my father came out of the back sleeping area and was nervously slamming a clip of ammunition into his .45 caliber automatic.  He peered out of the front camper window but could not see the source of the howling.  "What the heck is it dad?" I asked.  "Is that a wounded bear or something?"  "I don't know," he responded.  "But stay in bed I've got a loaded pistol down here."  He continued to scan the outside of the window trying to see what was out there.

Again the "WWWHHOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAWWWAGRUNT!" started.  Someone outside said,"It almost sounds like it is circling the campground."  "Shut up your scaring me!" shouted a woman.  By now our nerves were frayed because the howling sounded close and had gone on for about five long minutes.  "There it is!" someone shouted.  "There by the edge of the woods!"

I had no way of knowing what they had seen but the words sent a spike of fear through my body.  "I swear I saw it for a second," the same person exclaimed.  "God it was huge! To hell with this I'm going inside!"  Again "WWHHHHOOOOOOOOAWGRUNT!" bellowed from the nearby forest.

Suddenly I saw the same man come back out from his camper holding a 12 guage shotgun.  He pointed the shot gun in the air and fired three shotgun blasts into the air.  I heard several people yell and scream when he did that because they were not expecting it.  After that everything went quiet for about three minutes.  Then we heard another "WWWHOOOOOAAAAAGRUNT" but it sounded farther away.

"It sounds like whatever it was is leaving now," my father explained.  "I don't care I think we should leave," my mother insisted.  As I looked out the small window I could see some other people pulling up the stakes of there tent and throwing gear into the back of their staion wagon.  In another campsite some people were already backing their camper out and heading towards the main road.   We also quickly got dressed and threw all of our lawn chairs and camping gear into the Winnebago.  We were behind another camper that was also leaving because of all the commotion.

To this day I don't know if all those people left because of the howling or because of three shotgun blasts that the guy had fired off in the middle of the campground.  I couldn't blame them for leaving for either.  I know we were.  I remember my dad driving the RV to the outskirts of Redding and spending the remainder of the night in a well lit supermarket parking lot.

The next day we continued our drive south and my father refused to talk about the experience.  He later told us it was just somebody playing a prank and left it at that.  But I know that wasn't the truth.  The thing had sounded too loud and powerful to be made by a human.  Years later I was surfing the web and came across a Bigfoot website that had sample recording of different bigfoot scream and howl.  Several of these screams and howls sounded very similar to what we had heard that night.  I am now convinced that what we heard that night must have been a Sasquatch.  That erie howl is branded into my memory forever.  But at the same time it was the moment that sparked my interest in this mysterious and elusive creature.  I'm a believer now and always will be.
 
 

Activities of witness(es):    We had spent the day down at the lakeshore and had just finished dinner.  We went to bed and had been asleep for a few hours when the howling, moaning and grunting began.
 
 

Description of Creature:   Witness did not see the creature, only heard the howls and screams
 

Other Notes or Observations:   Commotion from people in other campsites.  Everything including the sounds of nature stopped when this thing began it's howling type moan.
 
 

Other Other Notes:   I know there are other people out there that also experienced this with us.  Unfortunately at the time they were all strangers to us at the campground.  Many, including us, left immediately after the incident happened.  Either fearing the howling creature or the gunfire.
 
 

OTHER SIGHTINGS IN THIS AREA?:      Not that I am aware of in the exact area.  But I have found that the history of the Redding and Shasta areas is rich with numerous sighting reports dealing with Bigfoot.  Red Bluff is a short distance away only farther North.
