DATE:        1977 or 1978
 

TIME:         10:00 P.M. - midnight?
 

LOCATION:  Cow Heaven Canyon, Kern County, California.
West of Hwy 14 and Hwy 178 junction.
Southeast edge of Sequoia National Forest.
Near San Andreas Spring in Cow Heaven Canyon.
 

TERRAIN:     Mountains
 

OBSERVED:  As best as I can recall, it was opening weekend for deer season in either 1977 or 1978.  Several family members and I were sitting around the campfire late one evening when we heard a loud, deep growl come from the mountainside just outside of our camp. To me, the growl sounded angry and somewhat threatening.  It did not sound like any of the animals I was accustomed to hearing.   All of the adults immediately ran to their respective trucks and grabbed their deer rifles.  I followed my grandfather to his truck where he pulled out his spotlight and scanned the mountainside.    We didn't see anything, nor did we hear anymore noises that night.    It was the only time I ever saw my grandfather or my father appear scared.

The next morning during our hunt we did not see anything unusual in the area. We did, however, find a large herd of mule deer.

Other Notes:  Within a few weeks of the first incident, my cousin and I were hunting low on the mountainside opposite of our camp, which would have been either Boulder or Buddy Canyon.   It was about mid-day when we approached a draw that had the usual thick stand of scrub pines.   As we approached, I remember getting a very uneasy feeling and just stopping.    I turned to my cousin and saw that he, too, was looking uneasy.   Without words, we started to hike up the steep, sandy mountainside to pass over the top of the draw.  The whole time we were in view of the draw I had a feeling of being watched.

I have hunted that same area for several years afterwards and never had any similar or unusual experiences.  The last time I hunted there was in 1988 and it appeared to be over-hunted and the deer herd gone.

Other Other Notes:    It's too bad that there was not this kind of forum to discuss this topic back then when it would have helped someone in their search for BF. I had heard of BF back then. But, did not think that it was a BF encounter, although I could never explain it. Now that I have found this site and have read of other similar experiences, I believe it may have been a BF.
