DATE: 1946

LOCATION: Alabama, Jefferson County

TERRAIN:  Mountainous

OBSERVED: This is the story told to me by my Grandmother (deceased) back in the early 1980's after she saw me reading a book about Bigfoot in her home.  The coverof the book had a picture frame from Patterson's movie on it.  My Grandmothernoticed the picture and said, " So that's what they call those Boogers?".  So,shocked as I was, I asked her what she knew about them, considering she lived in Alabama and had never been to the Pacific NW!   So she sat down and told me this story.

It happened in 1946, my grandfather had been dead a little over a year. My grandmother and 6 of her children lived in the woody mountainregion of north central Alabama, Jefferson County to be exact.  It was a Saturday night and she had just finished putting the kids to bed and wasdoing some ironing as she waited for two of her daughters to come home from double dates.

She had just put the ironing board up when she heard this loud blood curdlingscream come from down at the foot of the mountain, She had never heard anythinglike it in her life!  She said it made her hair stand on end.  It would scream everycouple of minutes and each time it did she could tell it was coming up the mountainand closer to the house.

She had no telephone,  and was 3 miles from the closest neighbor so she grabbed grandpa's shot gun locked all the doors and windows and turned out all the lights, butthe outside porch light.  She thought she was at first dealing with a black panther or mountain lion, because the scream sounded like a cross between acougar and a women but deeper and raspier.

She could tell that the creature was circling the house and when she would look out the windows she could tell it was staying right at the edge of the light.  By this time the children had been woken up and were screaming and crying , this seemed to make the creature scream all the more.  Finally it quieted down and Grandmother got the kids
back to sleep.

She sat down in the kitchen to catch her breath when the creature screamed out again!!  To her it sounded like it was right behind the house!  She sat in the kitchen with the gun waiting facing the kitchen door with the lights off.  Suddenly she heard a loud hump as if something big had jumped on to the porch.  She could hear something kind of shuffle on the wooded planks towards the door.  She looked up and from the shadow from the porch light saw this huge shaggy creature on two legs walking across the porch.

She said it was covered in shaggy hair and had real long thick arms.  Suddenly sheheard a pickup truck coming up and the creature bounded of the porch in two stepsand was gone.  My aunts and their dates (my future uncles) came up and saidthey had seen a bear run off and my grandmother told them that was no bear. About that time it began to scream and the boys could tell it was in the woods, they got their guns and with the head lights of the pickup tried to spot it to geta shot at it.  It never got closer screamed a couple of time and then was gone.

The next morning there was smell oily hair found on nails in the porch floor, that smelled like rotten eggs and a few "big foot prints" in the dust.  Down onin the timber line they found a few pine trees broken off at the 5-6 foot level, and
followed this to a creek, which my uncles said was very spooky! But that was it . Grandma heard the screams several more times in the middle of the night, but it never came back up the mountain.
