DATE: Fall 1996
TIME: Late evening, dark 30 or so...
LOCATION: Near Slapout, Alabama, Elmore County, State Highway 111
TERRAIN: Open clearing on the back side of a friends land
OBSERVED: We saw glowing eyes 7 or 8 feet off the ground, in an open area without any trees just outside the ring of our firelight, approximately 30' away. The eyes were reflecting from our camp fire and looked to be about a foot apart (although this could have been an exaggerated perception due to the feeling of near panic that hit at first.
We also heard loud breathing/wheezing coming from the direction of the eyes. I had been out hunting earlier that day and after the initial shock wore off I side stepped to my truck and got my rifle. I fired a shot up in the air.
Whatever it was appeared to turn around and then we heard heavy foot steps running back toward the woods. We discussed things, and as I was armed we decided not to call off the gathering. After that we didn't see or hear anything unusual. However, I remained nervous and agitated. I've always been able to tell when a person or even animals were watching me, and for the rest of the night I had that feeling.
When
we returned the next day (hoping to find tracks or some evidence) we found
nothing except a few broken branches high enough up in the trees that I
had a hard time reaching them
(I'm
about 6' 3" tall.)
Description of Creature: Glowing eyes 7 or 8 feet off the ground, also heard loud breathing/wheezing
Other Notes: We were gathering up for our monthly CB Radio get together. We always met up at this friends house and lit a bon fire. The fire was already lit and at that point only 5 or 6 of us had arrived.
